Looking for anyone who can help me understand what caused the fuel pump eccentric to score the inside of the timing gear cover in a circle about an inch wide. I was in the process of replacing the water pump when the top bolt broke clean. A lot of time trying to extract it led me to pull the timing gear cover when I discovered the scoring. Fuel pump eccentric seems to be tight, less than a quarter inch play on the timing chain, and no apparent play in the timing gear. Thanks in advance for the information.

the problem is that there are different fuel pump eccentrics....at least 3 that I have identified. What year block are you using and what type of eccentric (1 piece or 2)?

Also gasket material will come into play a bit too.

I haven't removed the eccentric yet, but it appears to be one piece. The block is a 1965 289-2V.

look on ebay for the 2-piece units, they are cheap and should solve your problem, thats what I ended up using.
