I bought my second mustang the other day. Its an 89 LX convertible with a 2.3L. The engine has a problem that I hope someone can help with.

When I hook up the battery, the fuel pump runs and there is a hiss at the 2nd injector. The hiss continues and does not stop. It sounds like fuel going into the injector. The engine runs, but misses.

Question, How can the fuel pump run without the key on?

When I ask the prior owner about the problem, He says that the car had a new fuel pump on it some time ago. He also said the problem started with the engine miss, he thought it was a bad injector, then one day when he was trying to find the problem the fuel pump did not shut off when the switch was turned off. He un-hook the battery and it sat untill I bought the car.

Any suggestions? The guy says there is two fuel pump relays, one in the trunk and maybe one under the dash. I don't have any manuals, but will get some.

Thanks in advance.

sounds like the fuel pump has either been wired directly to the battery, or the relay is bad... then you will need to replace the injector. take out the drivers seat and under that there is a small relay by the carpet. check the connections to see if they've been tampered with by the previous owner and try unplugging the relay and replacing with a new one to see if the relay is bad...

you can see mine (89 2.3 as well) next to my MSD box...

there arent TWO relays by the way... theres the one under the drivers seat, and then theres an inertia safety switch so if you get rear ended it shuts the fuel pump off... sometimes if the fuel pump isnt working, you can press the reset button on the switch... its located in the trunk next to the latch... there will be a hole in your trunk liner stuff with a button you can press... if it doesnt click then its fine... if it clicks then your inertia switch has been tripped...

also if for some reason you need to work on anything fuel related (injectors, fuel filter, pressure regulator, etc etc) you unplug the inertia switch and start the motor and it will relieve pressure in the lines so when you pull an injector out it doesnt spray fuel everywhere... then just plug it back in when you're done.

Isn't that PaintShop wonderful. I used it to see if I wanted to paint the car or what add-ons to put on... You can really see what things will look like.

Nice ride Ka0tyk.
