Fuel pump install

Is this a pretty straight foward install or does it get tricky? How long should this take? I'm thinking about putting my new pump in tomorrow but not sure if I should wait for my dads help, or go ahead and do it.

I would wait for help. Two is always better than one. Make sure the tank is darn near empty too. Make sure to lay down some cardboard under the tank or some blankets so if you drop a tool it doesn't make a spark. The install is pretty easy, but the whole thing is very dangerous.

I did mine by myself in about 2 hours in and out. Make sure you get the fuel disconnect tools to unhook the lines. Also make sure the gas is pretty low or it will be a PITA to drop the tank. The filler neck is probably the most tricky part. Unbolt the one bolt holding in to the tank and drop the driver side first, then drop the pass. side and slide the neck out of the tank. The seal between the tank and the feeler neck may rip to be prepared to buy a new one. It cost me a big 5 Bux.

me and my dad did the fuel pump on my old 87 gt conv, pretty easy

hard part was to align the pump back into the tank so it would sit properly

word to the wise......

take as much gasoline out of the tank as possible and use ropes or a jack with a board on it to balance the fuel tank as it comes down and to put it back on

shouldn't take more than 2 hrs, good luck

Thanks for the replies... I would normally just wait but I want to install my trunk mount battery kit and I'm going to do that at the same time as I change my fuel pump so I dont want to wait

This is how I did mine. I used a jack to help lower/raise the gas tank. Def change the tank grommet. If its old it will probably rip.

What everyone else said - get a friend and make sure your tank is about empty. This is actually the one install that turned out to be much easier than I thought it would be. You have to be careful, but as long as you do that, the install itself is very striaghtforward and pretty easy in my opinion.

Where can I get one of these? Do you know if discount autoparts has one? I havent had much luck with them at all

I bought one of these before the install for $16 (ouch!) from Ford b/c I couldn't find it anywhere else and was told I would need a new one. When I pulled everything it was in great shape and I wouldn't have needed a new one. I put it in anyway just for piece of mind. If you can, and have a ford dealer close, I would check to see if they have one in stock and then wait to see if you need a new one or not.

Yea, the seal will probably tear, mine did.. Just used some RVT and all is well.

I would def. wait to have help.. Its going to be a bitc* without help, when your trying to drop the tank, and hold a jack steady, balancing the from the center, at the same time. You obviously want to try and run all the gas out, but there will be alittle left over. Get the fuel disconect tools ( $10 at autozone) Makes life easy.

On the install.. I woudl hardwire the conections, not crimp them using some cheap conectors.. Meaning, solder the wires. Make sure you get the sock filter on good..dont want that falling off. And another important note.. Dont use a anything metal while trying to knock off the retaining ring on the tank.. Dont really want any sparks.
Try and use somthing aluminum, cooper, or a brass punch.

Thanks for the help mike. I'll just wait until tomorrow, or later tonight if I have time, for my dad to help me out. I don't need it in, so I dont want to take the chance of messing it up. I'll have some pictures with the summit trunk mount battery kit tomorrow probably too.

can you not leave the old one in, and get an inline fuel pump?
