fuel pump whines all the time.. is this ok?

I just noticed my 255lph fuel pump whining all the time. When I turn key forward the sound is noticeably different then usual. When I start the car the whine will continue for approx 10-15 seconds. Then it stops. I go to take off and drive maybe a block and stop and I can hear it whining again. Is this normal?

after market high volume pumps tend to whine louder that stock ones, but check your fuel pressure, if you're, I think 5 psi within spec, you should be fine..

Mine got louder when it was going out, but yet aftermarket larger volume pumps are louder than stock.

Also is your tank near empty? The pitch changes when the tank is low (and the pitch can change in said situation when cornering, etc).

Even the stock one whine, but mine did get louder before at the end of it's life. Like Hissin said though it gets louder/quieter depending on fuel level.

Thanks for the replies. The tank was low actually. I was just concerned that it was starting to go south on me.

add some more gas to the tank and see if it sounds the same.

in my experience, you get a slight change in tone and you may as well drop the tank and replace it. i have had horrible luck with fuel pumps failing.

mine recently did the same. sounded weird, tank was low. put more gas in and it is back to normal.

The 190lph walboro pump I put in was actually much quieter than the stock walboro pump, so I don't know if it is automatically more noisy when the pump gets bigger. The brand of pump might affect things too though.
