Car turns but won't start. I changed the fuel filter a few weeks ago after a similar problem. Changed the fuse for the fuel pump and made sure the inertia switch wasn't tripped. Had my wife turn the key while I had my ear to the tank and couldn't hear the fuel pump 'whirring'. That's gotta be the problem, right? I just want to be sure before I spend 100 bucks and go through what is sure to be a bitch of an operation here....

Confirm that when the key is placed into the "on" position, that the theft light goes out after a 3 second "prove out". The theft light should not blink during cranking.

Review the following thread. It contains detailed instructions on how to confirm a bad fuel pump.

Thanks for the info, sir! Def the fuel pump. OK so here I am, I've got the tank dropped and the ring on top unbolted...how am I getting this thing off? Does it turn somehow? Do I pry it?

Holy ****, man. After some cursing and a partial hernia getting the tank back in I got it done. Worked like a charm! I thought I could reuse the filler neck grommet since it didn't look bad but when I filled up I found out I was WRONG. Guess I'll get that tomorrow....after all that I'm tempted to just let a shop install it, though....lazy?

Any useful tips on replacing the grommet? Ford place quoted me $300 to replace it and the only way that happens is if they give me $300 worth of the parts counter chick. I'm hoping I can do it without dropping the tank again.

I paid less than $20 for a new grommet full price at the Ford parts counter.

Since you have done a fuel pump replacement, you have seen how everything is put together. I don't see how it's possible to replace the grommet without dropping the tank.

To anyone else reading this thread. The service manual calls for the old fuel tank grommet to be completely cut away before attempting to remove the filler neck from the tank. This is done for a number of reasons. Over time, the grommet will bond to the filler neck. This make removal difficult and the likelyhood of the old grommet re-sealing is nil (as in this case). The other reason is to prevent damage to the filler neck check valve. If the filler neck is pulled out while the grommet is in place, this will damage the anti-rollover/anti-siphon check valve. This check valve can not be serviced without replacing the entire filler neck assembly.

If dropping the fuel tank, recommend following the service procedures. Cut the old grommet away. Re-install the tank using a new grommet.

As much as I tried to prove you wrong, that sucker wasn't coming out of there without dropping the tank. Almost but just short by a centimeter. I even tried just lowering the passenger side of the tank to get a better angle on it but nothing doing. After that, though it was pretty straightforward. A lil oil on the grommet and the filler neck didn't even put up a fight going in. Thanks for all the helpful info, everyone!
