Hi Guys,

Just wondering if anyone has replaced their Fuel Sending Unit in the gas tank? My 90' GT's gas gauge isn't working so I figured I'd replaced the FSU...Can it be done without dropping the tank? The stock fuel pump is still in the tank, so I figure if I gotta drop the tank, then I'll replace the pump as well.

you have to drop the tank. and do both at once. the cheapest place i could find the sending unit was laurel mountain mustang. thinking it was around 65 shipped. half the price of the local parts store. and yeah, i did a walbro 255 at the same time, and a fuel filter. just try to have it pretty empty, have a buddy help you. get it up reasonably high on jackstands and just bench press it. much easier with 2 people.

cant do it with the tank in...i think i've probably had my tank out bout 3 times for various reasons...its very easy... but yes, i def recommend replacing the pump while your in there... the whole job is very straight forward...my only other recommendation is make sure they give you a new sending unit-to-tank gasket with your sending unit...mine didnt have one and i had to wait like a week till they could get me a new one cause the old one was shot...now i always check the box to make sure everything is in there... good luck, its a piece of cake

Thanks guys. Yeah, I've replaced a fuel pump before in my old foxbody, and it wasn't a tough job at all. Any suggestions on which fuel pump to go with? I've heard BBK stuff is getting to be crap, so I might go Walbro again or Holley, prolly 190lph. Once all my mods are done, I plan on being around 350HP, so the 190lph should be enough flow.

I kinda like the Ford Racing one, its cheeper than the BBK or Holley but Ford parts seem to last a long time and do what they say they will They are $90 at 50Resto.com but their sending units are $83 so you would save alot by getting that from LMM.

Well, technically, you CAN do the FSU (and the fuel pump) with the tank still in place ... but it involves cutting holes in your trunk (which some friggin' retard of a prior owner did to my '86 GT 'vert ).

Dropping the tank on a Fox isn't that hard. Just run the tank down as close to empty as you dare, pump/siphon out the rest into a gas can or two, unbolt the two straps, remove the filler neck, and it pretty much slides back out. It's the process of putting it back up there that's a major PITA. It REALLY helps to have an extra pair of hands helping you out during the re-install.
