I love these kinds of questions. The kind with absolutely no details.
Here's an idea - you can get your car sprayed by the neighborhood kids with Krylon for prob ~ $50.00, or a Foose job for $20k. I assume you want something in between those extremes.
What sort of paint job do you want?

This is a tough question, and the range can indeed be $50 - $20k, but it really just depends on a few basic things: How much are you willing to spend? What kind of quality do you want? And how involved/detailed will the paint job be? Figure those things out and you'll realize you'll probably need to compromise on a few things (unless you've got an unlimited budget).

yeah im looking for something like not too expensive but a decent paint job... i kike the paint job BRTNSTRNS, looks real good
get a good paint job
don't bother throwing money into a classic without making it look good.
you can get a very decent paint job by doing all the body work and primer yourself and then get it sprayed by a cheap place.
the hard work is in the body, getting it straight and getting 40 some years of door dings out. that's what cost all the money. if all they are doing is spraying a topcoat and clear coat, it's hard for them to mess it up and you could probably get away with a good job for $800.

I am in Europe so my figures won't apply. I want to strip the car to the bare metal, epoxy prime, and repaint with three coats and then clear coat.
A local dutch guy asked for EUR 10k (about $12k). Another asked for EUR 5k and might be able do a decent job but he takes months. I don't want dutch working on my car because, if I may generalize, they are a nation of pig farmers and fisherman. They have no tradition of craftmanship and it shows.
If the dutch were expensive, the Germans are more so. At least I can be certain of a better job. Still, I don't want to spend EUR 7-8k.
I am looking in Italy. When it comes to craftsmanship, the Italians are the way to go. I have some friends scouting for me in Brescia and Milan. I have been quoted EUR 3.5-4.5k for a complete job. Drop the engine, pull the glass, remove the interior, strip to the base metal, repair rust spots, and repaint engine bay, inside of the car and out with epoxy primer, three coats of pearl and then a clear coat. I think this is the way to go.
Of course I might spend over EUR 1k in gas getting there and back but I could turn it into a mini vacation.
So back to your original question as to how much a paint job for your classic would cost, I can aver with confidence that "it depends."

i paid 2000 for mine. you get what you pay for (for the most part) when it comes to paint. i would say just go around and get quotes from paint shops. good luck

i am now painting my fourth car and i definatly know what i'm talking about...
do you know how long it takes to spray a car that already has bodywork done and has primer on it?
answer: less than an hour.
you figure around $600 in high quality material and the paint shop is still making out with $200+ an hour.
i've seen people waste $10K on a paint job because they didn't want to do a little work themselves, the extra 8-9 thousand could be used on a motor, suspension, etc. the only reason paint jobs cost so much is because they take a lot of work, not because it is a highly skilled trade, look at the people that are doing the body work!

lets just remember cost of materials... Some paint can cost over $300 a gal. Add in labor at $50/hr for hours of wetsanding, painting, fillers, primers... I would say a show paint job could cost around $9-10k. A standard daily driver paint job from $1-2000. Try and find someone around that does work on the side. Remember that prep is 75% of the paint job (maybe 90%).
