What would I have to do to make my hood scoop functional on my '03 GT? Also does that padding on the top of the hood serve a purpose or can I take it off?
there really is no purpose to doing it, plus when it rains it's just going to soak your entire engine bay, and the padding is to block heat from getting to the hood I believe, the heat from the engine could warp or distort the hood without it, i think
I believe the purpose of the Hood padding is to keep heat in during the winter time. I do not have the padding on my Cobra R hood and it has not affected or warped the hood. Also trying to make the scoop funtional is a bad idea, both for water and other debries (sp?) getting in the engine bay as well as creating additional drag on the car, meaning it raises the chase of creating lift on your hood and having it fly up.
I'm pretty certain that hood liner protects the outside hood surface from excessive engine heat. I've heard of some who have removed the liner and damaged the paint.
I also have heard stories of people who removed the hood blanket having paint fade/warpage down the road.
I'm also pretty sure it's flame retardant so if you have an engine fire the hood won't burn up right away.
I wouldn't think it'd be that hard to fabricate something to make the scoop functional, but the problem is they aren't air-tight the way Ford produces them.. you'd have to first find something incredibly strong to hold it on, maybe rivet it in places and use some sort of RTV or B-half. Then, just fabricate a duct to run to the airbox. You'd also probably want to include provisions to drain water and **** before it makes the airbox.. which with a little planning probably wouldn't be too hard.
To make your scoop functional, you would probably have to get an entire Mach 1 setup, which would definitely cost some money..... but otherwise, I don't think there is an entirely safe or effective way to just mod the one you have....
