Use the SOP meter...

Get one of your buddies to ride along with you. Find a level stretch of road where you can do some testing. Don't choose a speed range that will make you shift gears, the shift quality & speed will affect your results. Use 2nd or 3rd gear and do a run from 2000 RPM to 5800 RPM. Call out the RPM as it increases and have you buddy record it and the elapsed time. If you have one of those cheap digital watches like I do, a stop watch is built in. If your bud was careful to record the results, you'll have a nice chart to use to find the proper state of tune.

I've had a g-tech now for a few years and its great. Its pretty accurate and very consistant. I've tested on a few cars all with real world results.
Its not as accurate for the horsepower shince you have wind resistance to account for, but for the 0-60, 60-0, 1/4 mile et and mph its awesome.

I mounted mine in teh driver side heating vent. the vent still pivots allowing you to level the g-tech, but the vent keeps it secure- the windshield suction cup mount allows the g-tech to swing a little - making the readings a littele less acurate. the g-tech also measures constant g's, and peak g's.

I've also tested at the track and the relutls are withing 1/10 of a second on the 1/4mile. the mph is a little higher but the g-tech explains this. the 1/4 mile timer takes your average speed of the last 60ft of your run and considers this your mph, but the g-tech actually measures your speed right at the end of the 1/4 mile.

If you have the cash get one unless you live close to a track, even still the g-tech will quickly pay for itself.

I got mine off of ebay, if you could get one for cheap then do it. In order for you to get the closest results you need to know the exact weight of you car. It is consistant, but I don't know how accurate the hp reading is. It told me that my camaro has 260 hp. I know a lot of you mustang guys will laugh and say that is right, but I don't think so. I will find out when I get it dynoed. I haven't used it on the mustang yet, but the stang is stock so it is not worth it.

i think you hit it on the head. it may not be ABSOLUTELY accurate, but is probably pretty relatively accurate. change something and it probably accurately shows the difference. but for equating absolute stuff, probably not super accurate. Michael once talked about how even dynos are really good for back to back runs, when it comes to tuning and knowing HP, etc. i think he said a click or two on the straps, etc, make a difference. then of course, there is dyno to dyno differences.

so all in all, the G tech thing sounds cool.

just my ramblings.

JR, LMAO. ever frugal, arent you. :) (compliment, you and i think alike).

:OT: anyone know a cheap way to pull codes on a 94 camaro. cheapie code pullers wont do it - need a scan tool from what i gather. R6 bullet, any thoughts?

Exactly what he said. I tested mine at the track and it was 1/10 of a second off. Exactly what they claim. Good stuff.

Just don't get busted making those 1/4 mile runs!!! I sold mine and do all my testing on the track, where there are no children or idiots or deer to run out in front of you.
I will say that it worked good and was quite accurate.

As far as pulling the codes from a 94 camaro, I have always used a scan tool that my auto tech class has. My auto tech teacher told me that with a few jumper wires you can actully jump the pins and the engine light would flash the codes. I don't remember wich pins he told me though. Try looking around online, sorry I couldn't be more help

thanks bud. FYI, after '93, one needs a scanner to retrieve codes (not a 30 buck code puller). then later, GM went with an obd-II connector on OBD-I cars!! guys love that.

(if someone has a 93 camaro, they can jump the ground and self test terminals in the 12 pin connector with a paperclip).

thank you for the info, though, R6bullet. :)
