Gas Gauge Died

Anyone know what the cause of this is. I can always judge by using my trip odometer thing, but i would like to know how i could replace this. Thanks alot.

Edit: By the way, this is in my '91 GT. thanks again...

I have a buddy that's going through the same thing. Is there a way to tell if it's on or the other? Or is it pretty much just replace it and see what happens?
 
Tmoss, doesn't the slosh module also control the operation of the other gauges? If the module went out, wouldn't the other gauges read incorrectly or act unusual as well? It is referred to as a gauge ampifier. BTW, Ford part # is e9sz-10e849-a , not e9zz in case he decides to order it.
 
Cant say if its national or not but I know here in Louisville KY its been a huge problem. Cause.............gasoline. There have been tons of cars having this problem with the gas gauge not working. Seems the gas has caused the float to not work. Its been the hot topic on the news for a week now.

I've heard that usually happens when your pumping gas from a station that's (older) and lower than the surrounding areas, AKA water f's up your tank... but that's just what I've read, can't remember where... (Probably somewhere on the internet which means it's worth about as much as Martha's stock)

Wasn't aware that it conntrolled all the other guages - how does it do that? most of the time the guage is just the first element in a series circuit that ends at the sensor.
 
That's why I was asking you. Once upon a time I thought it was just for the fuel gauge as well but somebody on here argued the point ( very well too) that is was for all of the gauges and not just the one. :shrug: I guess we'll go with my original thought and yours and agree that it is solely for the fuel gauge. :spot:
 
yep, as far as i know, the anti slosh module is for the fuel gauge, and the gauge voltage regulator is for the other gauges (something about hysterisis, as Michael Y. puts it). keeps them from oscillating with voltage output changes (like how aftermarket volt meters twitch with each pulse of a turn signal).

i dont see how fuel could affect the performance of a float. floats still work, even if submerged in water....unless it rusted and stuck. of course, if the float has a leak, it will gladly fill up with any liquid. :D

about the only thought i have for testing if the A-S module or sender is at fault is: grab the sender wire between the A-S module and the sender. assuming it sends ground (it should), ground the wire. if the gauge position changes, to me, that suggests the A-S module is allowing the gauge to move properly, and suggests the float is bad.
with the above test, if the gauge did not move when the sender wire is grounded, i would guess the A-S module is bad (not allowing the changing signal to get to the gauge).

you could also check resistance in the wire before and after a fill up.

probably kind of depends on what is wrong. sometimes it can get pricey to have someone else chase stuff down, depending upon how smart they are about doing so.

That keeps your gauge needle from moving up and down while driving over bumps and while cornering.

your forgot that it controls the blinker fluid too. if not, the blinker gauge would be all over the place. :D

Maybe the sending unit in the gas tank. My gas gauge died and i replaced the sending unit and now it works great. Hope this helps

That was my problem to. It's a variable resistor printed on a card actuated by the float. My arm did not have good tension on the resistor trace, so I just bent the arm for better tension 4 years ago and it's worked like a champ since.
