Gas gauge question

My gas gauge acts really weird.Lets say i have a half a tank,when i crank the car up for the first time of the day the gauge will fall to a half a tank,but when i start driveing the gauge will climb all the way up past full and stay there no matter how much gas is in it.What would make it do that

I would say probably the sending unit in the tank. Someone here might know better though....?

i was thinking that if it was the sender it would never read right
