Gas tank for 79 Pace car

Why am I having such a problem finding a new gas tank for my 79 pace car? All the listings that I find start at 81. I am restoring an 82k car that has been sitting in my garage for 8 years, I am going to replace the tank, lines and carb. Any info on any of these would be appreciated.

I was almost positive that the gas tanks from 79-85 were the same? (excluding FI tanks)

The 79 and 80 gas tanks ARE somewhat unique.
They use a larger filler neck and grommet for those years.
Trust me , I know first hand.
When I went to swap my 79 tank for one from an 86, I had to
get a filler neck and grommet also.
Hope all works out in your search though.

http://www.rickshotrodshop.com/ they are pricey but nice custom made tanks. You might want to call aeromotive also if your not concerned with costs...

SMR thanks but i am keeping this car painfully stock. It still had the 1979 spark plug wires on it and was 99.9% stock, it had air horns on it. I got the engine out tonight and on a stand and started the teardown. If I can't find a new on , I will coat the exsisting one until I find a new one. I have a few months.

por15 makes good coating for gas tank...well i think its actually U.S. STANDARD TANK SEALER but I used it on my stock sumped tank and it was real easy to do and affordable and worked well.

Hissing cobra- man I love your car, I have the pace car apart right now but I plan on posting some before and after pics when I get it fired up which should be spring. Thanks for the replies

Thanks. As for the gas tank, I was going to swap mine for a 1990 tank, even though mine wasn't and still, does not leak. I was nervous using a 21 year old tank! When I went to install it, I realized that it was totally different. I cleaned mine and painted the outside of it and reinstalled it. That was back in 2000, and I haven't had a problem with it. Good luck in your quest to find one for your's. Like I said, www.foureyedpride.com may be your best source to find one.
