i just bough a 91 mustang and it was getting horrible milage like 15 if i was lucky, so i just replaced the fuel filter( i do this with every car i buy) i check the plugs and they need to be replaced so im doing plugs wires and pcv valve today and ill check the air filter. check all that stuff first youd be amazed at how some of these things could effect you gas milage.......Id love to get 30 miles like some people claim they get

How about calculate your actual milage? It is simple and will tell you if you actually have a problem or not. When my 2.3 was stock, I never got less than about 21mpg and got a best of around 26mpg with an automatic.

If you're getting 14 mpg then why haven't you looked into that? Especially if the check engine light is on?

Run the codes and find out what's wrong. Could be O2 sensor, could be something else entirely.

Pick up your own code reader, it comes with a book that tells you exactly what the codes mean.

A code reader is not necessary; the stock Check Engine Light or a test light should be more than adequate for reading codes. Ford EEC-IV trouble codes are all over the internet and in most service manuals.

I average 28-31mpg in my '94 Toyota truck and 25-28mpg in my SVO. You should be averaging at least the same with a 2.3 Mustang.

ok is there a diff way to get these codes i can get to around the 3rd code then eveytime i get lost in the middle of a code and the pauses screw me up anyways this is what i have so far

117
(O,M)
ECT sensor is/was low or grounded - ECT

118
(O,M)
ECT sensor is/was high or open - ECT

622
(O)
Solenoid/circuit failure - shift solenoid 2 - Transmissions

the trans was rebuilt rite before i bought the car but any ways theres more codes but i can distiguish the pause from a new code so if someone can help me out let me know

If there is a fault in the ECT circuit, then the ECU is probably not going into closed-loop mode when the engine warms up. That likely accounts for some of your poor fuel economy.

On a side note, wth is with those links in the quote of my post?

engine coolent temp sensor circuit.

You need to get that checked out, your sensor could be bad or there might be a problem with the wiring, but at any rate, like 65shelbyclone said, the engine is probably stuck in open loop (cold) mode which means it's using more fuel than it should be.

Ok so discard those other number I ran it again and this is what its showing...

136 Injector pulse width higher than expected with BP/BARO sensor

223 Loss of dual plug inhibit control

224 EEC processor/ECA detected coil 1,2,3 or 4 primary circuit fault

WTF does all that mean

It means that your car either has a failing ECU or one mess of an electrical system.
