I bought my 89 a year and a half ago. I have some of the basic bolt-ons and have been changing the interior from grey to black. I am still green behind the ears when it comes to most of it. Somebody mentioned to me that I should change out the gears before I do too much to it. I see and read about people changing gears but I don't know what they mean.

What gears are they talking about..are they in the tranny or the rear differential? How do they affect performance?

Thanks

most likely they're talking about the rear end gears, your car probaly has 2.73's or 3.08's aka freeway gears, i'm savin up for my gear swap/track lock rebuild odds are i'm going 3.73's since i use the freeway once in a while still

if you do a search in here on gears, you will find tons. there seems to be a thread a day on it.

it is the rearend gears (in the differential). stockers are 2.73's or 3.08 optional - auto can come with 3.27's.

i would check the driveshaft turns ratio to the turning of the wheel to ensure you dont already have gears.

they basically get you into the powerband quicker. you can accelerate quicker.

good luck.

I just went from 2.73's to 3.73's not too long ago. Very good investment, here's a pic of inside the rear end, you can see the ring gear to left and the pinion gear low center back behind everything. Those are the gears you change out, pictured are 2.73's.

I just went from 3.08's to 3.73's and it's the best mod i've done yet. I noticed a huge difference from stock gears. Gears are sweet. Get them!
