How much should I pay to have gears installed? Do i need anything other than the gears? Installation kit? The car has 19,000 miles on it.

Charges will vary depending on where you go. I've seen everything from a case of beer on up to $1600. Averages are around $200-$500. You shouldn't need the bearing kit with only 19,000 miles. And the gear kit should come with shims and a new crush sleeve.

How far are you from D.C? If not to far, I'll take you up on that.

Um, pm me and I'll get you hooked up with someone that will do it. I used to use a tech at my dealership, but have a guy at a very reputable Mustang tuner shop that will do them.

Install your own = free. That is what I did. An added benifit was that I learned a lot of stuff about gears and drivelines. If you are just changing the gears it is not too bad. A weekend project for a novice. That is a novice to gear swaps, not a novice mechanic.

I'm a novice mechanic....

It would be great if someone who has done it before would work with me. If anyone in the D.C. area feels like taking on a project let me know. My main problem is that I live in a town house. I have no garage, and because of it few tools and no place to work.

I know the feeling. That was me just a few years ago. Installing gears is not hard, but it is time consuming. I would say that a good shop could do it in about 2 hours on average, and definetly not more then 3. It takes me about 4-5 hours to do it by myself. That is sitting on the garage floor with the car up on jack stands while taking my good old time. So if you are just talking about labor then that could be any where from $100 to $200. You need to factor in gears $150, fluids $10, and any seals or bearings $20-$100. Just get out the phone book and start calling around.
