I was wondering what weight of gear oil is supposed to be in an 8.8 rear? I am going to change the fluid in my 97 cobra, to try and stop the whine noise. I am thinking of using royal purple with some ford friction modifier.

Actually I think the 75W-140 synth was not used until after 1999. That 97 Cobra probably has 80W-90 conventional gear oil in it. That is what I would stick with on that car to avoid mixing types. And with 4 ounces of friction modifier.

I believe that the Royal Purple brand has the friction modifier already in it. Check the label...
