How can I check the door jam code to see what axel I have ?

If your name is correct, you have a 7.5" rear axle with 2.73 gear ratio in it. Unless someone has messed with it already.

There is also a tag on the rear differential cover but he is correct. If you have a V6, 2.73 & 7.5

2.73 seems wimply. I was unaware that all V6 had the same gears. Has anybody ever upgraded the gears if so what ratio do you recommend ? Right now its all stock and I have plans one day down the road for making some power, but for now I would like to see better pick up and I can always change the gears again later. Has anybody ever put anything like 3.73 gears in a stock V6 how does that work or is that over kill ? Its pretty much a semi-daily driver.

I have 3.73's and the stang is my daily driver as well, its not overkill. and if you have an auto, alot of auto guys like the 4.10s.

What speedo gear do you use with a 4.10 in an auto? I have a 23 tooth for my 3.73's.

I think its the same for some reason thats what I remember?? you can always check www.steeda.com they list what you need on there site, or they used to, haven't looked in a while.

Automatic Transmissions with 8 Tooth Drive Gear

1990-1998 Automatic Transmissions

2.73 Gear Ratio / Gray 18 Speedo Gear
3.08 Gear Ratio / Orange 20 Speedo Gear
3.27 Gear Ratio / Purple 21 Speedo Gear
3.55 Gear Ratio / White 23 Speedo Gear
3.73 Gear Ratio / White 23 Speedo Gear
4.10 Gear Ratio / White 23 Speedo Gear

As you can see, the 23 tooth is the last speedo gear offered. Your speedo will be off if you go with a ratio over 3.55. When you have this, you have to adjust your needle manually or get a speedcal.

The reason for the 23 tooth being the highest that is offered is due to the size of the drive gear in that it can not accomodate a speedo gear with any more teeth than that. It is physically restricted.

I didn't read the replies, so maybe somebody beat me to it. On the doorjamb sticker, there's a box at the bottom that says AX. In it there is a letter, here is what the letter means:

M=2.73
E=3.27
Z=3.08

99+ have the same stock ratio? and i cant seem to get a clear answer on whether the 99+ models require a speedo gear also or if the speedo is controlled electronically.

99+ require the use of a speecal (electronic) to correct the speedo issue. Using a speedo gear will get you close, but not exact. You'd have to pull the gauge pod out and reset the needle to get it dead on.
