My gears are really tight, if im brakeing to a stop sign it takes alot of effort to get the car into 1st for example. Would a after market shifter clear it up?

Yea, I'm having the same problem, although it's when shifting into reverse. I would assume that an aftermarket shifter, or even a used shifter that is in better shape would fix the problem.

It's your transmission thats the problem, not the shifter. An aftermarket transmission will not cure it.

What is happening is that the clutch isn't completly dissengauging. This is usually a fault in the stock cable and quadrant system. Your cable is probally stretched more than the quadrant can adjust. More than not, a shifter won't fix the problem, neither will a new tranny.

I would look into one of the many aftermarket quadrant/FWA/cable kits, that should fix the problem.

this was my first thought too - certainly amongst the first things that needs to be checked (it is relatively easy to check).

or it would be a clutch issue itself (worn out disc, etc).

but i think we might be askew here. in reading your post again, you say it is hard to downshift into first while rolling. ummmm, that is not the best thing in the world to do. while first does have a synchro, shifting down to first is not a great thing - if you need to do it, be sure to rev match to help out your synchros/blockers (if you are driving over 5 mph and try to jamb it into 1st at 1K rpm, it aint gonna like it).

for reverse grinding, put it in a forward gear first, then reverse. this slows the cluster down so you dont grind the straight cut reverse gears.

good luck.

Sotrry i didn't clarify that enough, i dont downshift into first going to the stop sign i put it into first with my foot still on the clutch getting ready to take off from the stop sign

Another possible problem other then a worn cable/quad is a blocker ring or syncro. When these wear, they do not allow engaugment of 1st from a dead stop. In my years with T-5s (6 of them) this has happened in 4. Eventually it will start popping out of first and grinding putting into first from a roll.
