I'm about to get some gears on my 97 gt auto vert. I was thinking about 4.10's but i dont know if thats a little too high. This is my daily driver and I will be driving it on highways and everything so I dont want to lose too much. How much top end will I lose, and will I gain a lot of traction? And how much is it to buy them and get them professionally installed?

You're looking at roughly $150 for a set of gears, and anywhere from $100-$250 for the install.....

Personally, DONT WORRY ABOUT TOPEND, you have no damn need to be goin 150 anyways. But for you information, you won't lose much of any, b/c the lower gears will help you pull throughout more of the RPM and (therefore) gears....

Also, traction is gonna go bye-bye.....

And you MPG's really won't be affected by the swap that much at all. The main factor that kills most ppl.'s gas mileage is the way they drive.

How much top end am i going to lose? I hope it isnt more than 10 mph, the reason I say this is because I usally race on highways at night and I have hitten 140 before I slowed down, so thats why I dont want to lose to much top end. But on the other hand these rice rockets keep up with me and or beat me from stoplights because my wheels spin too much, and I dont know why else. When I say stop lights I dont mean civics I mean Lancers, preludes, and rsx's.

I must have gotten accustomed to the gear change within a couple days. Sometimes I feel like 4.10's were a waste, but then I drive my friends car w/ 3.55's and realize the difference ; ) . Acceleration is awesome w/ 4.10's. It's so addictive, you may wish you went 4.30's!
I paid about $200 for the gears and bearing kit. Install was another $250. Worth it in the end? Yes, but at times it would be nice to have a 6 speed. You should be fine in the auto.

Theoretically the top end for 4.10's is around 180. You'll run out of HP before you do gear. With 4.10's you get to your top speed quicker. Just a question though. I thought the autos were limited by the computer to 120? Being an auto you might want to go with 3.73's. A little less RPM's while cruising. Also if your wheels spin now you're only going to get worse with 4.10's unless you learn to launch and get some sticky tires.

Ok. Go to www.stangstore.com and look for gears there. They'll probably be cheaper than anyone else. On average, a gear install takes 4-6hrs. to complete. Aside from the gears, you will also need 2qts. of rear differential fluid and one bottle of friction modifier. I think 4.10 gears for your automatic will do nicely. Might want to invest in some sticky tires too for when you go racing.

Here are some good rules to follow for cars that came stock with 3.27 gears:

1 - Manual - 4.10's

2 - Autos - 4.10's or 4.30's (don't forget, you must get the speedo calibrated with an Auto!)

3 - If you have a power adder like a turbo or supercharger - 3.73's.

4 - Nitrous is best with 3.73's too, but remember, most of the time you are not using the juice. So, 4.10's are still a good choice.

In my opinion, 3.55's are a complete waste for these cars UNLESS you have a major power adder. If you go with 3.73's, you WILL regret it. You will RARELy find ANYONE ho complains about 4.10's.

:notnice: Not true, I'm not going to lie 4.10's are a good choice, However I got 3.73 and have no complaints. They are wonderful and don't forsee a problem with any car with 4.10 seeing is that when I was with stock gears I could stay even with a buddies GT from a roll who had the 4.10's. And Speedo calibration has to be made either way... Not just the Automatics

Does that imply that one could get digger gears on a 5sp and NOT have to recalibrate the speedo? I wouldn't hesitate dropping 4.10's in mine if the speedo wouldn't be off...though I lean towards a Diablo or somesuch soon anyway...advance is nice, and recal gearing is built in. 4.6's should've had shaved heads and a premium fuel prog.....at least on the GT's, coulda made a few HP. i rant, sorry. First car I ever had that runs on 87....

You have to recalibrate your speedo with any gear change despite if you have an auto or a stickshift. Its just easier with the five speed for with the auto you have to have a chip or ECU flash. With a five speed, you only need a speedcal. You can get the speedcal for cheapest at www.brothersperformance.com I'm going with 4.30 gears in my auto car real soon and I will get a dyno tune done to correct my speedo and to get the best tune for the car. If you can get a dyno tune done for your car, I recommend that over any chip or programmer any day.
