I know there are numerous amounts of posts on here on which type of gears to get. I decided to do gears first before doing the suspension. I have a few questions.

1. I plan to use my car as a daily driver and I also do a lot of highway driving. I called up a local shop and they told me that 3.73 is the way to go and that 4.10 is to much for the daily driver. Anyone else beg to differ?

2. How much of a difference will I notice going from the stock gears to 3.73? I am looking for more torque and pickup at this point.

3. Would 3.90 gears be more worth it rather then 3.73's?

4. Is it recommended to replace the driveshaft after upgrading gears or can the stock driveshaft hold up to new gears? I noticed that brenspeed only has one aluminum which is rather expensive. Any other recomendations?

5. I have decent experience with working on cars. Is a gear install easy enough for the average joe or is this something a pro needs to do?

6. Do I need to get the 8.8" Master Shim Kit with Bearings from brenspeed as well as gears?

7. How will my gas mileage be affected?

1. I would go with 4.10 unless you do alot of highway at speed (70+).

2. IMO 3.73 is not a significant enough difference from stock ( depend what stock gear you have if its 3.55 or not)

3. if you where going to go with the 3.90 you might as well go with the 4.10 its like 100 rpm difference at speed

4. you don't have to change your driveshaft and there isn't much out there that is any cheaper, and if you find something cheaper be carefully of quality.

5. imo, it is not a job for a weekend wrench turner simple for the purpoe of shimming correctly. ( i am not an expert i had mine done by a shop)

6. the shim kit is needed bearing are not but are a good thing to replace since you are going to be in there anyways.

7. gas mileage would not significatly change for city driving, infact depending on your driving habits it can actually improce ( most people don't drive with improvements until they have had the gears for a while and go back to driving normal) Highway gas mileage at speed ( over 65-70) will drop a little.


all information above is not to be taken 100% factualy it is my opinion and information i remeber based on my research on the similiar questions.

please feel free, anyone, to correct anything that you feel is inaccurate in anyway

Besides mileage, they are both good.

I haven't put them in yet, but I've been lookng at speed calculations. from a 3.31 it will be very noticeable; third goes from a ~108mph redline to ~96 mph. for fifth, 3.31 gives you ~2000 rpm @70 mph, 3.73 gives you 2250.

Always a personal decision. got anyone local that will let you test drive 3.73 vs 3.93 or 4.10?

The stock driveshaft can handle it just fine. The spydershaft aluminum is ~$600. the driveshaft has other benefits, like reduced clunking and better acceleration.

The gear install is definitely something for an experience shop, as it requires setting the ring gear properly to avoid damage & noise problems.

7. How will my gas mileage be affected?

maybe a 0.5-1 mpg drop, with another .5 mpg for 4.10s. depends on how your driving habits will change. If you spent a lot of time in fourth previously and go to fifth more often now, it might stay the same.

How would I know if I have 3.31 or 3.53?

Also - when I am on highway - I am generally between 65-75mph.

If I go with 4.10 and go a lot of highway 70+ - what would I expect? High RPM? Loud noise?

Go with the 4.10s. You won't have any issues. I know a lot of guys with 05+ stangs and they love 4.10s. If I had an S197 I would put 4.10s in. I have 3.73s in my 01 but I have 17" rims and my tires are around 25.6". You guys have 18" rims and tires are probably around 26-27". Go with the 4.10s and have fun.

There's an axle code on your door sticker. You can search the net for a crossreference between the code and the gear ratio. Also my 07GT has a sticker on the diff cover showing the gear ratio - the sticker is viewable from the rear of the car.

Thanks for all the replies.

If I were to go with 4.10's, what would it be like during the winter? I live in NY and this past winter I managed to get by with my current setup.

I just had 4:10's installed on my 60,000 mile daily driver. I wish I would had done it a long time ago. When I am at 70, I am running about 2600 rpm in 5th. Haven't really noticed a big difference in gas mileage since I am in stop and go traffic and the 4:10's get me going sooner. I have a supercharger also and it is a perfect combo.

I am going with the 4.10's.

Where did ya'll order them from? I was thinking Brenspeed.

I've had great luck with Motive Gear gears - also, see what the shop is gunna charge you if they supply them. Some shops may not want to do the install because they wanna make their share off of the gears themselves. Look into it. Btw, Brenspeed is a great place, but, if 5 places are selling the same gearset, go with the cheapest one - same product right? my .02

As much as I love the 3.73 that came in my Bullitt, I would go with a 4.10 if the car would have come with a taller gear. If you go much shorter than that your going to have to shift too soon and too often down the track and I would imagine that your freway mileage would go down the tubes as well.

I will be having my 4.10s installed this week or next week. My car is my daily driver and right now I drive about 32 miles one way to work. About 27 is hwy or open road and 5 is stop and go. In June I will transfer duty stations, but living in the same area. Next duty station is also about 30+miles away with 90-95% being hwy.

You can't go wrong with the 4.10s. If you're looking for grunt off the line, these will give it to you. I love the 4.10s in mine, even being the automatic Mine did ok in the little bit of snow we had, but I had to use my tuner and put the shift pressures back to stock and start real easy, otherwise I'd just spin and spin every gear change. I stepped up to a 28.3" rear tire and can comfortably cruise 80 MPH at 3000 RPM and get just over 20 MPG that way 24 MPG when I stick to or 5+ the posted speed limit. I avg around 19 MPG most of the time with spirited mixed driving so I don't complain

We're pretty much in the same boat as I drive 31 miles one way with about 27 being on the interstate. I also cruise up to MD a few times a week which is about 70 miles each way(90+% interstate as well).

For the most part I am taking it easy. With the 3.55 and driving with the cruise control on at 5-10 mph above the speed limit, I am getting 27-28 MPG. My gas mileage seems to drop considerable during the weekend when I do most of my city/town driving. Hopefully the 4.10 will help raise the city/town mpg enough to offset the drop I am expecting on the HWY.
