I have a 1988 mustang gt. i just got it like 3 weeks ago and today i had my first problem with it. It has a GER racing transmission and i was driving it this morning it was fine but when i got in it this afternoon it would not shift into third or overdrive. I just had first and second which sucks but i didn't go far. Any body out there that might have an idea of whats going on with it please let me know thank you.

From what I gather it seems like it could be a broke input shaft. I guess the stock one is a two piece setup which is weak.

You got it 3 weeks ago. The car or the transmission? Did you install it yourself or did a mechanic?

Like the above post says, you need to go to any of these companies or people to determine your problem. Diagnosing this over a forum can be difficult. I can be an internal failure of the valve body , the trans itself, the throttle linkage cable, bands, input shaft, and other things.
Your best bet is to find someone who knows how to work on AOD's and have them give you a free estimate before you start replacing things.
GER transmissions aren't know for reliability BTW.

There's probably a lot of things it could be. Worn bands, foreign object in the valve body, improperly adjusted TV cable, etc. Search around for a TV cable adjustment writeup, I believe there's one here somewhere. The most obvious question is, have you checked the fluid level?

I got the car three weeks ago. It shifted fine in the morning. Afternoon it just decided to quit shifting into 3rd and 4th gear. It still shifts 1st to 2nd just fine. There was no clunk or noise to alert me that anything unusual had happened just the next time I went to drive it would not shift into 3rd or overdrive. I believe this tranny was built 12 years ago.

I did check the fluid and it was fine both the level and color.

Don't even know what a GER transmission is, and i've been doing the mustang thing for quite a while.
But you don't have a broken input shaft if first and second works fine.
In short, the input shaft is what connects the trans to the engine.

There have been several people that said they had the same symptoms as me and it was the input shaft. I did think if that were the case you would have nothing as the link between engine and tranny would be lost. However I have read several instances of people having first and second and not third or fourth and it being the input shaft.

So maybe it the shaft, or maybe it's the Torque convertor that went south.
I had the same problem on my pontiac years ago, and the TC was shot as well as the bands.
Debating what it is won't fix it. 12 years is usually at the end of an automatics life with usual miles on it.
Only way to know is to open the transmssion to find out, or have a trans tech inspect it. Usually upon opening it up, you'll want to repair it before you put it back together. So basically your looking at rebuilding your trans at this point. No sense and taking the trans apart to replace the shaft and not the bands and seals. So figure around $1500 for a stock rebuild, to $3000 depending on using hi-po parts. You might get away cheaper, so ask around.
Good Luck.

Ok so I found out that it does need a complete overhaul. I was given an estimate of $1800 to $2000. I now plan on swapping to a t5. I hear that it is not too difficult. Where do you suggest I purchase one from? Also what other cars can I get parts for this? Such as cross member, clutch pedal assembly, speedometer cable, drive shaft, and bell housing. Any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated.
