one of the applications they are refering to is our beloved 5.0.
A stat is a restrictor.

If restriction was good, performance stats would not boast flowing better than inferior stats.

It seems to me that they were referring to someone who lives in a cold climate in regard to the comments about applications requiring a stat.

If I read his opening post correctly, he already used a higher-rated stat and then a 160 with no noticable change.

I dont expect a stat to change much for him. I welcome all this information you have available. I posted a 'sampling' (as I said when I posted it) of something mainstream which I thought was easy to digest. Stewart components are well-regarded with enthusiasts.

We dont seem to be able to debate on the merits of the issue.

you're right he said he had a 180 or 195. it could have been bad. in his case it might not change much, but its worth a shot. even you're running a 180. like i said he may need to upgrade the radiator or get a better fan but the first step is a new t-stat. as far as cut&pasting all night, no thanks, obviously you've seen the same stuff i have, or you'd be running a 160 or no t-stat at all.
 
check the basics,
1.fan shroud?
2.clean the front of the radiator of w/ a spray hose (ditch the a/c condenser if you can)
3.air deflector? not sure how much this one would help, but on the hwy...
4.radiator cap
 
Here we go!

This past weekend I replaced:

The cap
fluid/water
Water Wetter
lower hose
and upgraded to a mech sunpro gauge.

It appears to hit about 230 degrees which seems dang hot. I do have a 160 in it now. I went from a stock 192/195 straight to a 160 trying to fix the problem with heat.

I did buy a 180 super stant thermo with gasket BUT have NOT put it on yet. I can do this like right now. It is the next thing to do in terms of $. Cheap part before attacking other pieces. The stock clutch fan may not be able to handle the 160 as it would be opening too soon and not allowing for much cooling. It is 9:15pm here in NC on Sunday Eve and could have the new stat put in within 2 hours. Thx, Todd
 
The 230 degrees was sitting idle and reving it within my garage - I did take one spin around the block early on. The whole idle thing is very bad and it is not even very hot here yet. i drove it this way to Myrtle for Mustang Week last Summer and it did fine - it just runs hot for me. Any possible virtual help is greatly appreciated.
 
I will say that the 230 is not immediate --- it creeps to that level - it may even go higher. I made a decision to ride on what I got with the 160 even though that is what the S/C calls for and see what happens over the week. I do have a 3row radiator not the old 2 row stock radiator. Thanks
 
Hola - its me again.

I have noticed that the temp creeps up whenever I idle. If I would not stop at all, it appears that it would stay at 160 per the mech gauge. I have the 180 superStant thermo ready to put in but haven't done so just yet. Remember that I do not have an aluminum radiator but do have a 3 row radiator in it. Idle or not is the key here. Any ideas? Thanks

This suggests that airflow across the rad from the fan is insufficient. It may be time to look into e- fan upgrades (I think you said you had replaced the stock fan clutch already?).

It may be worth trying the 180F or 195F stat first though.

First off put a 180 or 195 Tstat in there, for heating problems a 160 does nothing to help. Some things to check before going with an e-fan:

1. How far is the fan from the radiator? If the fan is too close due to a thicker radiator it will reduce cooling capability. It should be no closer than 1" and half the blades width should stick out of the fan shroud.

2. Check the area above the radiator between the radiator/shroud and hood, with my Mark VIII I have to put a blocker across the top of the radiator to block air from being pulled from the engine compartment back into the radiator (recursion).

3. Check the areas around the radiator to make sure they are blocked to stop engine compartment air from being pulled back into the radiator (recursion).

AC will make your heating worse as it dumps about ambient +45*F air in front of the radiator.

I have installed the 180. It has been cool here in Durham, NC --- I did start it up and let it idle the other night and it went maybe as high as 185 degrees even while idling. This was much better than the 160 so I need a HOT day or semi hot to give it the real test. I appreciate all of the advice. Thanks, Todd
