Goin in for my Interview to become a firefighter on wed.

I figured I would post what up with trying to become a firefighter here in Austin. My next thing is the board interview then if I get past that it's the c-pad with is the physical part of the test. Has anyone else here been through this? How was your board interview in your area? What did they talk to you about?

Good luck. I was a volunteer for a RFD near a major interstate and and high traffic state highway. As a an EMT I responded to mostly MVA's. Unbelieveable how many morons they had out there. Dumbasses who liked flashing lights and sirens in their pickups. Career firefighters are a whole different breed, though. Dedication counts for a lot. Good luck, it's a tough and demanding career.

I'm a vol. If you haven't done firefighting before it ****ing rocks. You never know what your gonna see when you roll up on a scene. You coudl think oh this is gonna be another bs accident and have mutiple entrapment and DOA's its crazy. And fires the heat is intense even after the fire is out and just seeing how the fire moves is amazing.

And sociopath I resent that comment about the guys with all the lights lol Ya'll should see my car. I got more lights then the state police lol (head and tail light strobes, microthin grill strobes, dual dash strobe, and oscilasers in the rear window ) . My truck is still new so all i got is a dash strobe and grill strobes but my old truck was hooked up

Good Luck Man it takes a special kinda person to be a fire fighter not everybody can do it. Its not an easy job and paid is even worse. If you need any help with anything let me know I'll help ya anyway I can. Let us know how it turns out maybe if you get the job we can talk about calls we've ran

Thanks, It's been something I have always wanted to do. I like not knowing how your day will be and what calls your going to go on. Every firefighter I have talked to loves their job and love going to work. Austin has a great shift schedule they work 24 on and 48 off and they start out at 33k a year. I'm not in it for money or glory, and I know what I will see doing it. I will see people get really hurt and I will see people die in this job. But It's what I want to do and I know what I'm getting into. And if this fails I can always be a cop lol.

Yeah if there was paid company's around here I'd quit my job and do that in a second. I would love to do it as a full time job. There was a thing in the Lancaster paper a while back saying they were thinking about hiring more guys so i called the head fire guy of the city and left a message to call me back if they decided to hire but i never heard from them they started out at like 45k i think it was and went up to like 55. LOL making 20 at my job now and i hate it so that would be awsome making mre money and doing something i love.

And like I said If ya ever wanna chat i'm here i love talking about the service and i got pics of calls we've been on. I was workign on a movie but when i reboted my PC i lost it so i gotta re do it maybe i'll post it up for ya when i finish it and for the other guys never expected firefighting to be a big thing on here lol I figured i'd be the only one

If i dont make the hiring this time around i'm going to vol here in hutto withc has a 1/2 paid and 1/2 vol fire dept. Austin took 3000 aplications for firefighters. I allready took the b-pad then depending on how my interiew goes i take the c-pad. Then after that it's the top 80-100 get jobs.

theres a couple around here thats got paid and vol but 99% are vol cause its all little towns around here.

GREAT NEWS well for me anyway lol I updated my movie maker the other night and i just checked and my fire movie is back I'm so happy and excited i didn't lose it. I'll try to get it done this week and post it up maybe they'll play it at the banquet on friday night

Man, no offense intended. Its just that where I was serving was a small Redneck oops Rural Fire District and it was alot of the good ol' boys from town. The only saving grace was the few dedicated and knowledgeable paid guys who kept the whole company from becoming a big disaster. Dont get me wrong it was exciting and fun and challenging, and I wouldnt trade it for the world. I was just venting about the state of that particular unnamed RFD and my experience. Almost all of the FF I have encountered have been super nice and extremely committed and proud. They should be. Most people just dont understand.

geeze fire on me about the light now busting on the rednecks I'm one of those too lol its cool. I know your just trying to make a point Hell I'm come right out and say i'm a wacker but i know people that are worse with lights then me so i don't feel bad

Just thought I would say good luck with the firefighter job. And if by some chance you dont get it then get on with a vol. dept and get experience and go back for the next round. Police is my full time job but firefighting/rescue is my hobby and I love every minute of it. And as far as the lights comment I can put most cops to shame in my mustang but the thing is they are all led and hideaway strobe to they are not visible until I turn them on. But that is all that keeps me from getting killed on the side of the road at night on calls. My area is very rural but also very populated and we have almost no street lights along the roads in my district.

I tryed to get a video of my lights but tehy don't turn out so well I was thinking of trying to do it how i got teh pics of my neons going to a parkign lot at night so the parking lot lights kinda help out and see if that does it better.

We're not allowed to go direct unless its in our route of travel and we have gear with us which where not allowed to take out of the fire house. LOL bad thing abotu all my lights is though is i live across the street from the fire house so most of the time i'm home when we get calls

I think it went good. They changed the hiring process this time around so they are still learning the new system. I will know my rank by the end of July. They have 1000 people the need to interview and figure out test scores for. I need to call the local vol dept here and sign up to be one. I think I have to take 3 or 6 month of training before I can become one.

What did you have to do to become a vol? What kind of trainig and how long did it take? Do you work shifts at the station, or are you on call?

Well as a junior you basicly go to Monday night training there are a few junior classes but not many. (glad i'm past that stage)

At our station they don't really require you to take Essentials as long as you show you know what your doing they let you go in but the training helps. Theres tons of classes you can take and most company's pay for you to go unless you fail. As for how long its an ongoing thing theres always stuff changing new easyer or safer was to do stuff and at m station we go over the same thing a lot but sometimes its good to get a reminder and some practice. We're i guess what you would call "on call". If the pager goes off and you can/want to go you go.

We have training every monday so we're always learning
