Going to be doing t5 swap soon...advice?

I will be starting my t5 swap in the next couple weeks and i was wondering if anyone who has done it has any tips on what to watch out for. i have a nice fresh rebuilt T5 and a king cobra clutch with the steeda clutch cable, quadrant, and adjuster. thanks

took mine out to put in a clutch a while back. did it in the drive way. its pretty straight forward. if your doing it on the ground just make sure its up lots high and its well supported. take your time and youll be all right.

i haven't done an aod swap myself, but i can mention a few things since i just replaced my t-5.

have a pump for filling the transmission with fluid, tool for removing the pilot bearing, clutch alignment tool (19 i believe i just put in a KC clutch also), good torque wrench.

everything else is pretty much straight in and out. sorry i have no clue about converting over to a manual though. hope that helps some

you dont NEED a pump to fill the tranny w/ fluid. You can fill it through the shifter whole, it will just drain extremely slow. It will take you about 15min to fill it up. When your ready to install the tranny, have a friend w/ you and gook up the clutch cable and have your friend step on the clutch pedal while you slide the tranny in place.... if not you will be in for a rough ride (atleast I had a hard time)

you can check out here for most of your info. I read the darn thing 10 times right before I did my swap, and it was pretty accurate. I would suggest digging up a t5 harness off ebay to make things easier. Also air tools with mondo long extensions will also help when you go to undo the bellhousing bolts. Good luck, it will all worth it in the end.

Why? I don't get what you're saying here. How can you hook up the cable without the tranny in? Or did you mean "gook"? What does that mean. I'm just trying to figure out what you're saying, cus it may help me in the future.

The clutch cable, is attached to the clutch fork, which is attached to the bellhousing, which can be attached to the block without the tranny, which will allow you to actuate the pressure plate, making it easier for you to jockey the trans input shaft in.

If you attacth the bellhousing to the block first how are u supposed to bolt the tranny to the bellhousing. o wait...are those bolt holes on the bellhousing external? i forget...i could go out to the garage and look at the housing but im lazy lol thanks for the help guys keep em coming

Installing that bell and transmission seperately makes life a LOT easier, trust me. If you use the alignment tool to align the clutch and flywheel, you should be able to get under there and just bench press the trans in all the way. It only ways maybe 75 pounds or higher. also....

-pull the center console. No matter what anyone says, you WILL NOT get that aod shifter out without pulling the center console. I bent my aod shifter bracketry under neith to fit through the trans tunnel hole better

-You can re use the aod flexplate bolts to bolt the flywheel to the crank. HOWEVER, you will need to locate 6 pressure plate bolts to bolt the pressure plate to the flywheel. be sure they are from an 86+

-do NOT use the adjustable clutch cable. Use ONLY an oem non adjustable clutch cable, and use that with a firewall adjuster. Read my article
http://50stangs.com/techarticles/clutchcableadjustment.html
it will tell you EVERYTHING about clutch adjustments

-the aod driveshaft yoke has a balancer on it that the stock t5's do not. Because of this balancer, the aod shaft is about an inch longer. In our case, the aod shaft WOULD NOT fit with our t5 conversion. you should source out a t5 driveshaft, or at least the yoke, if you don't there is a slight chance that aod shaft won't fit.

-you'll need from autozone a couple of plugs to plug off the trans coolant lines from the radiator.

save yourself PLENTY of time, as it may take two complete weekends to do this conversion.

cool, you got lucky. I don't know wtf?? My pops and brother were putting the aod shaft in, and they said it's too long. they said it was short by a fraction of an inch. Maybe if we lowered or raised the rear wheels it would have slipped in?? luckily I had a spare one from a previous parts car with a t5, so we just tossed the aod one in the garbage. I haven't ever heard of anyone else having fitment issues though besides us.

I live out here in Hawaii, and mustang parts can be hard to come by. After all the tracking down of parts, and spending an arm and a leg on shipping for the flywheel and clutch, if the driveshaft was too long on mine I would have killed myself lol. Something to think about for you T5 conversion hopefuls...

well i saved my plugs for the coolent lines in the radiator, i looked ahead in one aspect anyway. So you can use the flexplate bolts for the flywheel? i have heard that they are a different leangth is this true? do i need to use washers or somthing? I will be getting the rest of the hardware from a ford dealer probobly. One last question, are the belhousing dowels used on an aod too? like are they already on the car now and i just reuse them cause my bellhousing didnt have them. I have one piece of advice for anyone doing this...check the bellhousuing really good b4 u buy it...i didnt notice mine had a 8" long crack in it till i put paint on it. Little heli-arc and its all better now but what a pita. thanks

My AOD shaft fit ok but now I have a pretty bad vibration... I had it before I did tha swap, but the T5 just amplifies it now... need me a(n) (EXPENSIVE) aluminum driveshaft...

-i'm pretty sure (from memory) those dowels come off the engine block, and are used to seat both the aod and t5 bell

-flexplate/flywheel bolts to crank are identical in size, don't forget to use threadlocker on them, or you'll leak oil

-its the two upper bell bolts that are the different sized ones. Source out the right sized ones, or just use washers to take up the slack on the two uppers

-and of course again, you'll need the 6 pressure plate bolts 86+
