when I plugged the rubber boot up to the back of it and put the wires on the center post like they came off the old one it still wouldn't work, maybe I had a bad one or something. I got another one today.

If you can find the instructions from painless I would appreciate it as I couldn't find them.

A mini starter is still a good part to swap on.Less weight (lot less),smaller in size, more torque.I got mine from a '96 Explorer (new replacement !!!) for $20.00.

All the luck I have is bad luck!

I got the switch working but in the process I either just fried or finished off a bad mini starter.

The 4 gauge black wire goes with the battery cable and the 14 gauge red wire goes by itself right? Well when I did that I don't think the gear retracted after it started and I burned it up before I realized it.

Sounds like you swapped the ignition and the start wire on the starter motor relay.
