I have a 2003 Cobra with 9000 miles on it. I recently had a blowout with one of my Goodyear Eagle F1 GS tires. I never saw anything in the roadway so I am pretty sure I didn't run over anything. The tire came apart in three pieces. The sidewalls are still around the rim, but the tread was totally sheared off. I've gone out on numerous sites and seen good reviews about these particular tires. Has anybody heard of this happening or what might have caused it?

That's very strange that the whole center portion of the tread would rip off like that. How fast were you going when this happened? Did you happen to go back and pick up all the pieces that came off?

These GS D3s? I got 285s and 315s and they seem really solid. No issues. I got the 285s on stock 2003 Rims, and the 315s on AFS 17x10.5s.

Nobody ever sees what they ran over. If you're going over 15 mph you're not going to see a bolt or hunk of rusted metal in the road. In all my years of selling tires, I've never seen a tire that "just blew out". You ran over something.

Ok, for all you naysayers out there, I admit it is POSSIBLE that I ran over something. However, my friend in the car behind me never saw anything kick up behind me and I would think it would have had to be of considerable size to cause the damage it did. The tires are P275/40ZR17's and none of the people that have inpsected it see anything that looks like I might have run over something. In fact, they (Ford) are telling me that the tread sheared off because I was 6 pounds low on air pressure (not true.....checked air in tires prior to my trip to Norfolk, the scene of the crime). I was doing about 75 mph and immediately went off into the grassy median strip. No damage to the rim at all, but the tread came off in one complete piece and as I went left into the median, the tread went inside the wheel well and damaged my boot. Still debating whether to get another Goodyear or switch to BFG's all around.

If the tread and both steel belts came off in a 360 degree hoop and left just the casing radial plies from bead to bead then you ran the tire flat due to tread punture most likely. Also, the innerliner should look very wrinkled and somewhat discolored. This could have happened days or weeks before with little losses of air each day. It is very difficult on z or v type speed rated tires with such stiff sidewalls to know if you have 35 psi or 15 psi. If the tire operates at 15 psi for several days it will eventually fail as described.

I know that everyone has their own opinion, so here is mine. After getting my 03 Cobra, I noticed that the car rode really rough. I had traded an 01 Z06 for the cobra, so I knew a lumber truck ride (they call it sporty)WTF. I had the dealership check it out. They have a the high dollar Hunter machine. Three of the four Goodyears were out of round. Also on the Z06 in the rain with the Supercar (someone's poor idea of a joke) Goodyears, you could not drive over 60 MPH for fear of losing it.
I had Goodrich tires on my trailer for years then the company (supplier) switched to Goodyears. With the Goodrich, I never had a blowout and they were replaced only when the tread got thin. With the Goodyears, I blew out 4 tires, so I never bought Goodyear's again.
On my Cobra, I replaced the Goodyears with ToYo's. It rides 200% better and I can drive like anybody else in the rain.
For me Goodyears suck, bigtime.

Thanks for the input.....BFG's are looking better and better. Also found another thread with a guy that had his Goodyear blow and ran him into a wall. Not a good year for Goodyear!

I'm also a BFG, and Michelin fan. I had a T-bird SC with Goodyear's that wobbled at slow speeds. I drove the car for two years trying to figure out what made it do that. I imediately eliminated the tires 'cause they were Goodyears. I put a set of Michelin's on, and never had a problem after that. My whole perspective changed about Goodyear after that.

I was looking at getting a set of Goodyear tires from www.tirerack.com and was reading their comment section. The biggest complaint was vibrations.
