So I got my engine assy back from the machine shop, but I didnt get a bob-weight card for the balance, and the worst part, they never took the weight or the timing chain gear off the snout of the crank when they balanced it. I couldnt get it off at the time, and I said something but it was never touched because I finally got the key off and when I took the gear off, its was tarred oil underneath it. How cheesy does this sound. Also, how anal should you be with scratches on the sides of the pistons. Im not talking about the vertical lines running up the skirts like it got scorched, just some random handling scratches.

The balance part of your question I can't answer. The piston portion is an easy one. So long as they're not gouged to the point where you think they're structurally compromised then you'll be fine. As you're aware, the rings are what makes the seal and unless there's a problem, the sides of your pistons shouldn't come in contact with the cylinder walls.

I'd would be talking to the guys at the machine shop, all the parts need to come off when it is balanced, I'd be suspect it was never done.

Dagger is right about the scratches, as long as they are not very bad you should be fine.

yeah, my motor was completely disasembled to have it balanced, everything was weighed individually, it was balanced with the flywheel and balancer on there too.

I think with a 460 you have to have that stuff on the end of the crank though. The 460 has the balancer with a key, then a weight that slides on, and then another key for the timing chain gear. I think to keep things from moving around on the crank everything has to be on there, but the fact they never took anything off has me concerned. Added that they never gave me a bobweight card makes me wonder how good of a balance they did. This balance cost 192 which to me is insanely expensive to me. To get a really good balance you take the lightest rod and lightest piston and get the rest to that weight, weighing both ends of the rod. Then you weigh the piston, rod, rings, bearings, and pin, and make a bobweight off of that. Then you mount the weighs and spin the crank with the flywheel and the balancer, and again measure both ends and adjust the balance of the crank from there. Thats how I thought it worked, but the shop didnt even have any rings or bearings with them so how could they weigh them. Also, they said the guy who balanced it was very quick with it because he just did a 460. That makes me think, he just had a generic 460 bobweight that he used. I just have a bad feeling about it. The only thing I see done to the crank is some welding on one of the counterweights.

My crank was welded all over the place, they said they got it as close as they could. I told them to get it perfect, and I payed for it too

Yes the 460 is different since it has the counterweight up front, but I would have thought they would take it apart and clean it all before balancing.

It all depends what rod and piston you have as well as how much would have to be done to the heavy crank.

Smock,

If there are scratches on the pistons I use a mill bastard to deburr them prior to instalation. Then clean them off.

I forgot to add. I asked about it getting align honed, and they looked at me funny. They didnt really answer the question like they had checked. They just said if I did the block would need to be cleaned again because it was already done. I would think a real machine shop would check everything during the inspection and then let you know what it needs. Nobody told me whether it needed anything or not. Shouldnt they say, " Well during the mag and check, we measured the mains, and it could really use an align hone since your going to spin 6000 rpms. They never called me during any of the build. The only new parts I got were ARP rod bolts, rebuild kit, and comp springs, retainers and locks, they didnt bore it, align hone it, or assembly it for me, and yet it cost me $1600!!!

$1600 for a clean, mag, hone, balance, new rod bolts and rod recon, cam bearings and freeze plugs, and rebuild heads. My heads didnt even need any valves, seats or guides.

I had more then that done for $700..and the heads were fully rebuilt.

You would be surprised what most machine shops check and don't check. I mesure all my components before I drop them off and tell them exactly what I want done, it does help if you have a good relationship with the shop though.

It sounds like these guys don't know what they're talking about. You've GOT to be able to trust your machinest. Then re-check everything just to make sure.

I got my boss block

align honed
TP honed
bored .030"
cleaned
cam bearings installed

Then he checked all the specs on the block.

This cost me about $200.

I also had the heads rebuilt w/ 5angle jobs. The labor alone was like $80 and that included porting.

I'm sorry but unless you have a hook up, I find it hard to believe you got your heads rebuild with porting, and your block reworked for $280.
