Got it fixed!

As some of you may remember, a little while back, I posted how I couldn't figure out the alternator. Well, the story goes like this. I replaced my old alternator, because sometimes the car would die when stepping on the brakes acting like it wasn't charging correctly and the battery would slowly die overnight. So, I got a new alternator and it tested GOOD before it even left the parts store. Well, I got it home and hooked it up all correctly (went over it numerous times) and it wouldn't charge. I was pretty fed up at this point. So someone pointed out that usually when an alternator goes out it takes the voltage regulator with it. Bingo!
I replaced the voltage regulator today and the alternator is charging perfect just like it should! I was pretty happy.

But, I have been experiencing a sputtering problem for quite some time (mostly when the engine is cold) when I hold the throttle in one steady position. I thought that the old plugs were fouled, so I replaced them and it didn't help any. I have tried teaking the carb a little with no luck. So I'm going to drive it a bit and see if it maybe comes out of it. If anyone knows what could be wrong I would really appreciate some advice. Thanks!

Sputtering under a steady throttle sounds like ignition, or metering in the carb.

If your plugs are all good, check the wires, rotor cap...make sure everything is in good order. See if you can borrow a known good carb from a buddy, and see if that fixes it.

These are free ways to de-bug your engine.

Good to hear you're making progress on some of those issues you've been frustrated with. I agree about checking out the ignition system. Also, check for vacuum leaks. A lean condition can cause misfire under partial load. One good way to check is to take a bottle of starter fluid one of those long wand tips and spray around the base of the carb and ports on the intake while the car is idling. If the car idles up, then you've found a vacuum leak.

i had this problem about a week after you posted.. i had just replaced my alternator and remebered someone saying you should replace your voltage regulator when you replace your alternator. so i figured what the hell, its $12. fixed the problem

(i think i fried the regulator when i wired the alternator wrong - it was draining the battery completley in a matter of hours)
