So after seeing the Downs Ford Mach 1 car and the grille they did I went out to mimic it. Overall I'm pretty happy with the results. It looks good and will do the trick until someone makes a factory styled 1 piece unit or I just switch out the front end and do a cervini billet grille or whatever.

Anwyays the pieces I did were a Street Scenes black powdercoated grille with a 71-73 Mustang Tri Bar Pony logo on the front. That's currently about all I would maybe want to fix, it's a little off axis from the way the holes are. I may if I get a chance grind out a bit of a slot to get the bottom of the tri bar to come in a bit. It's not much and really only noticable when you're looking straight at it but the OCD in me probably won't let it stay that way for long, heh.

Check it out, let me know what you think (outside of needs a wash, heh been raining 2-3 times a day for a week or more now). Car wash Saturday AM just before the local Mustang Show.

Only downsides you can still see the old logo outline on the old grille and the install instructions were pretty much a waste.

Looking good...

The flag pony... can that be placed anywhere on the grill?

I want to get the grill with the fog lamps centered in the grill but I don't want to give up the pony within the existing grill.

However, I wouldn't mind putting a flag pony on the driver side of the new grill.

Yep it's just a bolt on one I ordered from Mustangs Unlimited. New repo from a 71-73 Mustang.

That would be the other option, I'm not sure if I wanted the centre lamps, that may be my upgrade path down the road should a grille like this one not show up. The bolts on the back I'd say are 2.5" or maybe a bit longer so it should fit through most grilles.

I'd love to hear any input on any ways to minimize the outline of the pony.

This is why I hate those overlays (but I'll save that rant for another discussion).

as to the best way minimize the outline of the pony - just take it off.

There are some fasteners on the backside of the stock grill that can be pulled out and the pony just comes off.

Oh yeah it's already off, it's just the solid outline of where the pony is that you can see. If you look at the picture above you can pick it out.

Ultimately it'll do until replacement ones closer to what I want come out. Blow by Racing sounds like they have some very slick billet ones coming in black.

not much you can do, unless you cut up your stock grille. might try a household window screen in black, that might help minimize the stock grille showing, but might also take away from the new grille.

if you dont care about the stock grille, you could cut the center of the stock grille out. but i like to save the original parts from the car, just in case.

Yeah I thought about that. It's not so desperate for me that I wouldn't just go order a Cervini grille or wait for the new ones coming a couple months. It was an experiment that I like, it's just that final bit is the only thing that I wish I could fix.

In this case the stock piece is already a lost cause because of the holes. If I want to go stock easily I'll have to order a new grille but I don't see much point. Like I said it looks good driving around and casual looks I just wish Ford had developed that mount differently. Ah well I have a car show tomorrow which is what I installed it for. We'll see what people think.

I say dremal out all of the old center grill except what you need to keep the insert fastened.

What about the lower, do they offer a matching piece?

They do in fact offer a matching lower but I didn't care much for the look. This grille after a few weeks has grown on me rather well. I'm still going to replace it with a new one when Blow By Racing announces availability of some of the very very cool ones they have coming out, but this will do the trick for now.

Another updated shot as that one above sucks...

Shows off the clear corners too.
