Got my TKO- 500!

Hi all, I finally got my new tranny I went with the TKO-500, I also got new pullies and a C&L mass air kit Car runs very good. haven't gotten it to the track yet. My brother was reading car craft and they tested the TKO 500 with a 3.91 rear end gears and a 26" tire and they came up with 5.13's is that right? first gear with the tko is 3.27 and my rear end gears are 3.90, my D/R's are 26 inches. First is pretty steep now. any thoughts

My only thought is:

How'd the tranny install go? Any suprises?

Only one suprise, my stock H-pipe hanger wouldn't allow me to bolt the tranny to the crossmember. other than that it was pretty straight forward. I love it, it's a blast to drive now.

I've been thinking of going with a 500 when I twist this one up (pretty sure that's gonna happen once I get a bit more grip in the ass end). I've been seeing allot of back and forth comments about what's needed for the install. What did you have to change to accompany the TKO... anything besides the hangar?

When the T-5 gave out I was opting for what to do. I though of going with an C-4 with a 3500+ stall, manual valve body, trans brake, ect, all out, but instead I decided to stay manual. I put my TKO500 in about two months ago, at first it was firm and notchy to shift. I kind of wished I had gone auto, but now it's been about 800-1000 miles and its really easy to shift, never look back at the C-4. With the old T-5 it was so easy to pull out of gear w/o using the clutch, but with the Tremec, I can pull pretty hard and when I jab the clutch it goes right where I want to pull it w/o any space between shifts. It loves to be powershifted.

I thought the 3.27 1st gear was longer?
Or maybe I'm comparing it to the 600's 2.97 1st gear...now thats short.

Stock T-5: 3.35 1st gear.
Tremec TKO 500: 3.27 1st gear.
Tremec TKO 600: 2.95 1st gear. The older standard TKO and some of the upgraded T-5's will run a 2.95 also.

It is barly noticable, not at all on launch, but the drop from 1st to 2nd isn't as bad.

I'll also be buying a TKO shortly.

TKO600RR maybe? Dont really like first gear but 5th gear looks like fun.

you can either get a new crossmember and slide it back as far as possible to get the holes to line up or you can grind off the tack welds and slide the original one back. the guys who put my tko 500 in had to use two shims on each bolt on the crossmember to get the tranny to sit correctly.....probably because of an old tranny mount that is a little smashed.

ECU 5.0 I thought about the new crossmember. but I'm pretty good friends with the guy at exhaust pro's I might have him make me some new hangers.

90 mustangGT Mine shifted really hard to for about the same amount of miles, But now it's just plain fun.

Don't know if car craft is right in their calculations for me haveing a final drive ratio of 5.13 but it sure feels like it. If I didn't have drag radials I'd probably be bounceing it off the rev limiter. it's pretty short.

yep you need to grind the welds off the crossmember and slide the connectors back further and they will fit, also be careful when handeling that bad boy they use some weird ass grease or selant on that thing Iended up staining my clothes and till this day they won't come clean with that red crap on it.

I am thinking on buying the tko 500 too. Do you have to change the driveshaft yolk?
