Well i finally got the car today, but as i expected there were a few downs. 1st it was overheating like a mofo, so we went to pep boys and bought a new thermostat and coolant. It was also backfiring, so we advanded the timiing with no timing light. We just went far enough to were it didn't back fire. Now it dont overheat as much, but it wont go lower than halfway and 3/4 of the way. 2nd A/c is not working, probaly no freon, but im gonna take it back for that, and 3rd the CEL is on, but i haven't checked it so i dont know. Why do u guys think its over heating????

I commend you Guero. That is the easiest-to-read post you have ever made, lol.

I have no idea what to tell you on the overheating. What all did the shop do to your car? Oh, and pull the code yourself and see what it is.

lol im stress free right now maybe thats why. they just swapped out the old 302 for the 306, i will check the light but im to lazy right now and its hot as **** its like 107 at 9:30 at night!!!!!

I dont know the arrangement with the shop, but if this was a straight-up deal (not a hook-up), and it seems reasonable, I'd make them fix all that crap.

If not, as mentioend make sure all the air is out of the system (you mentioned a stat swap). Make sure the radiator cap is holding pressure.

Please get yourself a timing light - with as much workin on the car as you do, it'll be a wonderful investment.

Didnt you get a real temp gauge? If so, what's the numeric reading?

Is the fan coming on?

And yeah, do yank the codes first thing if the shop wont deal with it.

Good luck buddy - glad to hear you atleast got the ride back. :nice:

No kidding. It's hot all over the freakin' country. Supposed to be 98* here tomorrow with 4,000,000 % humidity, lol.

Good luck on getting it fine tuned man.

oh i know, im not looking foward to it; thats why Im pretty much nocturnal during the summer. too hot during the day.

congrats man, if you dont already have a real temp gauge i would get one (i think i remember your posts about buying one a while back)

as long as temps stay below 210-215 your fine. if it creeps above that click on the max a/c and itll turn your high speed fan on. you should also run some water wetter to help with cooling.

Glad to see JT post this....I read the post and was glad you got the ride back.....first thought was air in the system.......do the pull the cap and squeeze the hose method........let us know

i think it may be something with the timing, not sure, but when im at idle it cools down half way, and when im actually cruising it goes up a litle, maybe its backfiring slighty or something i need to check the cel and buy a timing light to be sure. today the low coolant light went on so i just added some. but ihaven't done anything else.

and another thing the needles now jump instead of a steady climb, i especially noticed this on the stock rpm gauge. Anyway i could fix it, id really rather fix everything myself and just leave the a/c part to them

The fact that you're having to add coolant and that the temp gauge is jumpy *CAN* indicate air in the system. As it purges, you're needing more coolant (to fill the void from the air) and steam makes senders go nuts.

It could be something worse, but this is a possibility. Keep tabs on it, and good luck buddy!

Worse like what??? And how bout the rpm jumping
I missed this before. Backfiring, tach jumping............. Pull them codes!

I'd guess that you have a TFI, PIP or IDM code. The codes should help, but were I to crudely guess, the PIP is possible.

Good luck.
