Got the work done.....Now.....

Just got my car back yesterday from the shop. I had my new super 40 series flows put on and my robinsons 3.73's.

As I was driving down the highway, I could not go over 90mph or so. Of course I dont really know how fast I was going because I dont have the new spedo gear in.

This car is not a daily driver anymore at all!! I'm still not sure that I like the new gears. It has only been two days but it is just a lot of getting use to.

Can anyone give me their advise about 3.73's? Do you like them or hate them or what?

There is NOWAY that you can not go over 90mph with a t5 and 3:73 gears unless something is way wrong with your car.

yeah for real....did you get like 8:37s installed? somethin isnt right. are you going into 5th gear?

LOL. Yeah seriously, there's no reason you shouldn't be able to go over 90 mph. You won't even lose any top end speed with lower gears, maybe 1 or 2 mph.

are you kidding? i know people with 5x the mods you have, run 10's-11's at the track and then see them rolling out of the local Classic 50's on a Saturday night. There is no way that your car is hot enough **** to NOT be a daily driver.

I don't see what the issue here is? I run a 3.73 gear in my car that traps on the other side of 130 in the quarter and I drive it rather often??? Is there something under the gas pedal or what?

When I say that I am not able to go over 90mph, that is a guess at this time since I have not changed the spedo gear. When I get my car upto a good speed (poss 90 or so), the shifter starts vibrating a lot. I guess I will be able to go faster but I am not sure if anything is going to happen. This is the first time I have had 3.73s in any of my cars. Let me know what you all think of this. Thanks

my shifter vibrates pretty good at high rpms. i run 3.73s & love them. you might wanna check your tire pressure if you cant get over 90mph....j/k . ive hit, lets say, a good amount of speed w/the shifter vibrating.

if you're having vibration issues, it's likely the driveshaft is out of balance, which the new gears tend to exagerate. Pick up an aluminum driveshaft, it should smooth things out quite a bit.

90 with 3.73's is no problem at all, however, you'll be spinning close to 3grand or more by then, and it does NOT like to cruise that high. My chief complaint about my 3.73's are that I lost all my top end on the freeway as well. What I mean by that is now I'm going 65 at 2400 rpms or whatever instead of 80 at 2k rpms, and if someone tries to pass me, forget about dropping it down a gear to smoke them, you're already revving too fast. Gears are pretty kick ass on the streets, but not fun at all on the highway.

get an akluminum drive shaft for the vibrating issues

Thats what I am experiencing at this time. I love my gears, its just that on the highway, they seem to be screaming going fast. It will go fast, just that the rpms are way up there.

Do you think that a new aluminum drive shaft will help out a lot. Also, does anyone recomend any?

do a search here for vibration and aluminum driveshaft, you'll come up with pages and pages of the same thing. If you're experiencing vibration issues right after a gear install, the fix is 99% of the time the driveshaft.

I just looked at summit and they still have the driveshafts for $159. Looks like they have not raised the price yet on them. Is everyone running the Ford Racing Aluminum Driveshaft? Let me know ASAP. Thanks

On a factory engine balance, stock build (less exhaust) you're feelings are quite normal.

The steepest I like to go is 3.55s ...... I prefer sotp feel with more motor or adding boost. Plus I hate shifting every two seconds while cruisin' If its a track car, I say yeah, go all out on the gears.

The aluminum shaft is rumored to solve vibration problems. Put one in my cop car with stock 3.08s, so the difference was negligible. (More to free up hp/drop weight).

Ps - Why put more wear on moving parts than is necessary to accomplish desired goals (engineers perspective).

I couldnt disagree with you more. My morning commute (30miles) sees all but 2 miles worth of freeway traffic. Because of the higher rev's, you normally wont need to drop it down a gear...which is great. If you do have the urge to do it, you'll get a much better pull as you will be more in the meat of your powerband compaired to stock gears. Hell, back with my 2.73's I had to drop it down to 3rd on quick freeway passes.

Hoseman,

I recommend that you first try indexing your driveshaft. This may fix your vibe problem. Also if you go with an aluminum driveshaft you'll still have to index it and it probably won't be perfect anyways. Read this article for lots of info: http://home.hiwaay.net/~ctfrench/Driveline Vibration.htm

dude 90 w/o the speedo gear fix w/ 3.73's is actually like 75 mph or so...I don't have the speedo gear either and I was crusin w/ traffic in a 45 and looked down and it said I was doing like 70 or something crazy

I have the ford drive shaft and many of the same parts you do including 3.73s, and 245/45/17 tires. No vibrations, daily driver, 105 mph trap (so far) in 4th gear @ about 5800rpm. At highway speeds RPMS are ok in 5th gear (over drive), 3000 RPMs @ about 60 -65 mph this is much the same as cars used to run back in the day of 3 speed autos. Won't hurt anything except maybe your gas mileage.
