just a nother quick question...i hope...haha so anyways my car we just finished fixing the ignition switch wiring because it was cut of and the car would not start wtih the key, but anways after fixing that it started right up on the first try...YAY ok so then it was running kinda rough so i messed with the timing real quick and every time i try to start it now it makes a grinding kinda noise like the starter isnt retracting and keeping the motor from starting fully...any ideas why its a 66 289 manual transmission

pull the starter and check the splines and see if anything looks wrong.

could just be a coincidence that your starter failed the same time you decided to fix the ign. switch.

I just had something similar happen with my '70 Nova, the starter worked ok but it was noisy after it had been out and reinstalled. Sounded like the starter gear wouldn't disengage after teh engine got started, too. Turned out that the starter was not properly aligned with the flywheel. Reason: I missed one of the 3 bolts that hold it in place.... (shame on me)

had a rebuilt starter for a year, grinding noises. Thought maybe the battery wasn't pulling enough "umph" to start. I think my noid on the starter wasn't fully engaging the gear. changed the starter, no problems.
