Got an 87 Mustang GT. The catback system needs replacing. I'm gonna get some new mufflers, and my tailpipes are rusting right now. The mufflers can wait a little, but the pipes have gotta go soon. In the interest of money when replacing the catback system, is it even worthwhile to replace the tailpipes? Couldn't I potentially dump from the mufflers? Anybody want to fill me in on the benefits and/or cons of dumping from a muffler as opposed to tailpipes? I gotta get my pipes off now, and if I can avoid buying new ones that'd be great. What effect will it have on the tone of my exhaust?

If your state has inspections I wouldn't bother much with dumps. No real gain from dumps other than more noise/drone, unless that doesn't bother you, but it would get old fast.

It will work fine, but it will be alot louder/more drone than what you already have, if that doesn't bother ya....go for it, if it does ya better look for some new tailpipes

I just put tail pipes on a 93 i bought on monday. The person who had it before me removed them and let me tell ya the first thing i did was order a set of tail pipes from jegs and flowmasters it was so loud in the car you couldnt even listen to the radio. I don"t care how loud it is outside but id like to be able to take to person next to me. But all mine had were glass packs on it so it was loud

Mine was resinating under the car and coming right back in if you gotta leave off do it. but its ruff after a while

I have Borlas with dumps, yeah they are loud. I like the sound they give you though. It's alot deeper that when I had tailpipes. I set car alarms off when I idle through a parking lot.

yeah I don't have glass packs. its stock headers, catted x-pipe, and flowmaster 2 chamber mufflers. i'll give it a try without pipes. I don't mind the drone inside and the noise, I just want it to sound clean, not like a motorboat. if worse comes to worse i'll just spend to money on new pipes.
