GT Rookie, if u know Help!

Fell in love with Stangs...just bought my first one. If you know your **** and can help, I'd value your opinion; I'm not a mechanic and don't know a lot about cars. You don't have to respond here,...if you want just throw me an email. It'z an '04 40th Anniv. GT Coupe. I saw the other SLP thread below and read it, so I basically just have 2 questions now....

-Just bought the SLP Loudmouth. Not installed yet. Should I buy the SLP X pipe (or something else that compares) also? Is it really worth the coin? I don't want to throw on the kit and not have it sound perfect...I heard just the kit sounds great, but does it have any compliments that should be on with it?

-K&N. Saw a bunch of you guys made this mod. Is it just the filter, or replace the entire intake? Is it the Fuel injection Kit(FIPK) or is it the Aircharger. Again I don't know ****, I just saw an ad for it in Mustang 5.0 magazine...

If you guys (and ladies) can help, it'd be hot....Anything else too that you can think of for sound or jacked Horsies.......Thankx.

-J.

The SLP Loudmouth by itself is pretty brutal ... just as if you're driving around with no muffler. Adding an x pipe (that is offroad) will make the car even louder beyond belief.

I have an O/R X and the performance gain was great, and certainly made the car really loud, but I can't imagine driving a car with an O/R X and SLP LM. Ouch.

Get the K&N FIPK, forget all the chrome CAI BS. The K&N performs, and I highly recommend it.

Honestly, if you want that signature "Mustang" sound. Flowmaster 40 series are the way to go IMO. I have them and absolutely love the sound. especially at higher rpms. Everything else on my exhaust is stock so far, so i cant immagine how good it will sound with headers and an h or x pipe. SLP is pretty loud from what i have heard. going with an Off road midpipe may be overboard. IF you try your slp and dont like the sound, I highly reccomend flowmaster!!!
Good luck with everything and congrats on the stang!

dont forget-its not completely necessary to buy a entire cold air kit to have a k&n filter. if thats all you want-simply go to oreilleys or autozone and get a drop in replacement k&n for the factory setup.

Personal opinion here, but dont just buy the k&n replacement filter. I got one, spent the 50 bucks, and didnt feel a thing. I hear that someone made 8 horsepower with the K&N FIPK Gen II. Maybe that would be better, but I know my filter didnt do squat. Congrats on the stang. Good luck. Oh yea, flows and a prochamber sounds great. I personally dont like the SLP stuff, but whatever you choose. Good luck.

just get the drop in K&N and dont worry about the cold air intake. all it will do is look good. During the summer, it may actually hurt performance since the chrome intake tube will get hotter than the stock rubber tube.

:nice:
DO NOT GET A CAI... :bang: :bang: :bang:

GET GEARS GET GEARS GET GEARS!
4.10's NO LESS
DO NOT FEAR THE GEAR!

as or the SLP exhaust the gains are phenominal with the full setup. i believe MM&FF got 36 HP to the wheels on a stock 98 auto. I can't tell you on the sound though becausei have never heard one.

I take it you like gears?

The K&N FIPK Gen 2 has been dyno proven to give horsepower, personally I think 8hp is well worth the cost, plus it's much easier to check your filter to see if it's time for a wash and re-oil. I don't know why everyone is against the "little mods". I personally enjoy wrenching on my car and love the bolt-ons I can do in the driveway. Don't discourage the hobby by telling people "Don't get that it's crap!!!!!111!!!" Give an opinion yes, but don't act like a child.

Because after you run out of bolt ons to buy/install, you could have bought a supercharger or a safe nitrous set-up.

But realistically, how many people on this board are willing to or are able to be without the use of their vehicle while a supercharger is installed? Out of those, how many are willing to let their warranty go out the window.

If you want all out power, by all means supercharge it but don't knock the little mods. They're what keeps the entire aftermarket performance industry afloat.

Yep, i agree with you, but most people also buy small mods since they cannot afford the supercharger at the time. By the time most people would be done saving for the supercharger, their warrenty is probaby expired anyways. at least thats the case for this poor college student :bang:

NewGTJock, welcome aboard and to the Mustang world. To be honest, your question, while good, is LOADED! Lots of opinions out there. Best advice, don't jump to anything. Surf the web for a while....read posts, then make your decision on what is best for you and your situation.

Now for my opinions: As an SLP Loudmouth user, is sounds GREAT! That is, if you like the classic muscle car sound. BUT, this cat back will limit your other choices. For example, a quieter catback like a flowmaster will be more forgiving for an off road X pipe. So, if you want to add an OR X, forget it with the SLP. It's loud as hell and should be for the track only. On the other hand, the HP gains with the SLP is better than probably any other exhaust system. As a result, you can run with the SLP catted X-Pipe and still be ahead of most other exhausts without cats and not have to worry about passing smog.

Put the catback on and drive with it for a while before changing your mid-pipe. If you add the catted X-Pipe from SLP, it will get a little louder and have a higher pitch. It sounds more hollow and has less low end rumble. You may be actually moving away from what you want or making it better...depends on you.

Now to CAI (Cold Air Intake): On nearly stock, N/A Mustangs, you will not experience much gain. But as you modify the car or add a blower, it's a whole different story. This is a common mod as it is easy to do and is cheap...usually. Expect 0 - 7 HP gain from whatever system you choose. Just AVOID messing with the MAF. Keep it stock!!!! I went with the Steeda CAI over the FIPK for the looks. Hey, at least I am honest. And, I would suggest avoiding any fenderwall unit with the stock MAF. The bend before the MAF has been prone to cause problems for the MAF.

Let me know if you have anymore questions.

Most MAFs will simply try to trick the computer into putting less fuel into the engine, which is great for power but very bad if it gets too lean. There's really no need to change the MAF until you're pushing enough air into it to max out the voltage.

I got the C&L unit and have had NO problems what so ever.

I have a clock that is broken and it is right twice a day! Consider yourself lucky, but if I were you I would NOT think that you are not having any problems unless you have read your a/f across your entire rpm band. The C&L kit is designed to lean the mixture by as much as 30%. That is how it works. Keep in mind that the C&L is not a MAF replacement as it uses the stock MAF electronics, right? Just teh housing is replaced. Why, because it is designed to "trick" your ECU. C&L should not sell these without telling folks that they need a dyno tune. C&L builds these under the assumption that most stock stangs from the factory run a little rich, but every car is different.

I had one of these and my car ran soo lean that it miss-fired. The amount of leaning will only increase with the addition of other mods on the intake and exhaust side.

FallenPhoenix hit the nail on the head.

I listened to just the SLP catback with everything else(EDIT: this was on mustangexhaust.com), as far as exhaust is concerned, and when it was driving it sounded AWSOME and I LOVED it, but then I listend to the same year car (2003 I believe) with the same exhaust setup but this time it was just revving, and it sounded HORRABLE and sounded VERY loud and almost mono tone. It didnt even sound close to the same catback....I WAS sold on SLP when I listened to the first clip of the car driving. And also I heard a black 99+ GT with a SLP catback (I dont know if it had more, but all I saw was the SLP tips) and it sounded very good, just a little high pitched but not too loud while driving.Anyways I hope you like it, cuz if not you just wasted $300+.
