GT Stalling when put into gear (auto)

My sister's 96 GT automatic stalls when whenever we put it into gear. It idles fine and everything, but when you put the shifter into R or D, the engine dies quickly.

any ideas what it could be? anyone have the same problem?

if i hold the gas pedal slightly while putting it into gear, it is fine and doesn't stall.. so im wondering what it could be?

Mines does something like that one mornings where i havent drove in a day or two and its cold when I put it in drive it will not go it will bog down real low so I have to rev it up and get it warmed up before I head out.

5 Liter Mustang:

No definite answer (from me) but here are a few things to look at:
- clogged fuel filter
- throttle position switch
- idle air control (IAC) -- pretty common problem (car will not hold idle due to soot/crud build-up in IAC)
- loose connection at coil packs

Less likely (IMHO) are wires & plugs, etc.; you would have a problem throughout the speed range of the engine.
