GT to LX body trims

Hi,

This may sound like a stupid idea but I'm thinking about modifying my 1989 GT to an LX body trim, the reason being I would like to install Maier 3" fiberglass fenders and they will look like sh... with the GT trims. Am I right in thinking I only have to change the front and rear bumper covers and delete the side skirts?

I just looked at pictures from Maier's Web site and the side moldings seem to be pre-stamped on the fenders. Abcexclusive.com also have an interesting line of bumper covers. Where exactly would I have to remove sheetmetal?
