GT40 crate motor for my 84 gt

Most of the Ford Racing GT-40 crate engines come without intake for this very reason (because Ford Racing is leaving it open to whether you want to run a carb or fuel injection, and whether you are running a street or track intake, etc.), so you can just buy a carb intake and carburetor and bolt them on and go.

The second part of your question, about building a cheaper 300 horse motor, can be answered in a thousand different ways. If you want some ideas, try checking out the websites for some Ford magazines and checking out their performance street engine build-ups for ideas.

Try FordMuscle, Mustang & Fords, 5.0 Mustang and Super Fords, Muscle Mustangs & Fast Fords, etc, etc. Once on their respective sites, do searches for what you're looking for. There are tons of documented builds on reliable small block ford street engines that put out 300 horsepower that you can sift through.

I was thinking about the standard GT40 crate motor and a T5-Z for when i'm ready to do that to my car. I noticed the new crate motor in the 2007 FMS catalog which I might go with instead.

They haven't released the HP/Torque numbers, but it looks like a nice medium between the 347 strokers and the basic GT40.

I think the 342 is the same as a 347 but with standard bore.
300 HP isnt that hard to get out of a 302, but crate engines are nice becaue you save time over having to get machine work etc done, as well as put it together. with the ford crate engines, you MIGHT have to pull the timing cover and put the fuel pump eccentric on the front of the cam.
