guideplate alignment on AFR165's

Where do I position the guideplates on my AFR165's? They've got enough room to move around a little on the studs before the studs are tightened down. Do I center them side-to-side as much as possible? Do I push them towards the springs or pull them away from the springs? Is this a critical alignment??

Side-to-side is all you really care about for those guideplates. Set them so that both rockers are as centered as possible on the valve stems. Probably won't get it exact with the AFR plates, but close enough.

The best they will line up is a little splayed out. The pushrods almost contact the head under the guideplate. Should I consider different guideplates? Can I assume that the guideplates that AFR sent are good enough?

Here's a pic of mine...they are Edlebrock guideplates with 7/16" ARP rocker studs. Looked to be about centered from that angle

The pushrods aren't centered in the hole through the head. The guideplate angles them inward so they almost rub against the head. This then also causes the rockers to then angle outwards slightly.

About the most pushrod-to-head clearance I can get with the AFR guideplates is ABOUT .070" from the head for both. Is this OK?? Should I get different guideplates? How much clearance does the Edelbrock's (or others) provide?

I believe thats why hardened PRs have to be run with guideplates...she has the chance to hit some...
When you re-adj the rockers after start-up, if needed, check the PRs for wearlines and tweak those showing rub lines....

Sounds alright -- I couldn't get the rockers to be exactly centered either, and it was pretty close to the edge of the holes in some spots, just like you mention. I actually bought Isky adjustable guideplates, because I thought rocker alignment might be contributing to the noise my valvetrain makes (the adjustable guideplates didn't solve anything).

i thought the same thing its and optical illusion with the afr's. just use the guide plates that came with them put a little thread lock on them and torque them down to 60flbs. once you set them on the motor you will see that nothing will rub the head.
