H Pipe Sound

I am thinking about getting a BBK H pipe with two cats on it and was wondering if anyone has done this.

I have already tried an off road h pipe but it was WAY to loud. My car sounded like an old farm truck. The exhaust did alot of "popping".

I am running two chamber flowmasters for mufflers.

Basically, i just want to be able to hear the cam a little more.

I put a X-pipe with cats on mine after running a non-cat H-pipe for two years with my long tubes, after a week or so I took it off cuz it sounded weenie with the cats. If you wanna hear the cam you gotta leave the cats off they muffle that part of the sound from the exhaust.

Thats part of the reason I moved out of Southern Cali after living there for a year, Smogging sucks!

Of course the X pipe even without cats is quieter than an h-pipe without cats so that's part of the problem. My friend did the p\r h to o\r x pipe, a while later we swapped the x for the h again because it sounded better over all, more like a muscle car should.

When i had that off road h pipe, it sounded great at idle.

When i drove it down the road, it sounded horrible. The exhaust cracked and popped. Some people like that and thats fine. To me that sound doesnt sound like a mustang.

BBK "x" pipe. Those are very expensive. Summit has them for about $400.

Yeah, tell me about it... mine is up in the attic collecting dust... hopefully someday I'll get something out of that investment!

I have BBK catted h-pipes. They are loud, but then again I have Super 40's and BBK equals also. The Super 40's give a very deep bass tone, its crazy. The catted h-pipes give more drone at 2000 rpms, when I had an off road I could hardly notice it. I paid about $365 for my BBK catted h-pipe. If you can wait a few weeks I can sell it to you for $200, its only a year old. Im gonna toss my smog pump and throw on an off road h-pipe.

The BBK h-pipe w/ cats will be similar sounding to the offroad pipe -- just not as loud at a distance.

As a practical matter, I don't think that a cat pipe is going to be much different than an offroad pipe if you already have 2-chamber flowmasters and shorties. I don't think that the high flow cats offer much resistance, or that you'd hear or feel much difference. Plus, there's no reason to be a smog outlaw, if you can do it legally, although it costs more. I'd like to hear from a guy who could objectively show a meaningful difference in performance between an offroad pipe and a high flow cat pipe ON THE STREET. I mean, yes, a dyno or timeslip might show it, but otherwise......... High flow cat pipes work great, and I'm not being a tree-hugger when I say that the air really is cleaner in L.A. than it used to be. Do the right thing. Just my opinion.
