H&X pipe questions

Recently picked up a 89 GT 5.0 auto. When I got it, it was missing the H or X pipe section. It still has the tail pipe section with flowmasters. My first question is do you need to have a H or X or could you do true duels? If you have to have them What the best one? On a serious budget and don't want to spend a whole lot, so any help here would be great. As far as the motor is been rebuilt and is mostly stock (aftermaket air cleaner set-up is about it). It has the stock short headers on it. Thanks for your help.

You will be fine with no h or x pipe, are you still running cats? the h pipe makes the exhaust more of a deep sound where the x makes it more raspy, louder. Any ways you will be just fine with true duals.

I am assuming that there is pipe in the mid section and that they are true duals. I would still suggest to have a mid pipe. Remember Ford didn't spend millions of dollars on research for nothing.... With that said, other then a possible loss of power (and an awesome sound), I don't see how it would hurt anything.

No cat don't have a smog check to deal with. Its just the cost factor. True duels will cost maybe $50-75 the H or X pipe is $200 and up. I do realize Ford spent alot of time and money reaching this but how much of it was for emissions?

So the car is basically running now with out the mufflers, just straight from the headers? The H-pipe had nothing to do with the emissions. Mustangs have a unique exhaust note, different from any other car out there. No matter what the year is, this is due to the cross over pipe. If you are on a budget or don't car about performance duals will work fine, just not best.

If you go with H pipe or X pipe its not much youll be spending around $200 for pipe and having it welded on, if you already have mufflers.

Both systems are good, but from my research X pipe has better exhaust scavenging.
