My 429 torino is missing the 4 speed that it originally had. Can I use about any toploader to go behind this?? What am I looking for?

Depends if you want the right numbers or not. Check out the David Kee Toploader Transmission website. He's got charts that will tell you what you're supposed to have, but any big in/out tranny will work, but be aware there are different tailhousing lenghts, so you'll need to know which one you need there.

i'm sure you can... i'm pretty sure 429 SCJ and Boss 429 cars had Toploaders behind them, so they do exist...

A small block Toploader can also be used behind a 429. I ran them behind my 427 back in the 80's without problems.

Absolutely!
I've used a 351M truck bellhousing, 390 flywheel, and a 5.0 pilot bushing.. Be advised the small block T.L. input is about 5/8" longer than a big block, the 5.0 pilot bushing rides further up inside the crankshaft to compensate...

If you use the truck bell, there is no boss to mount the Z-bar pivot, you'll have to fashon something..... Or do the smart thing, buy a blowproof!

Only the front snout on the input is longer, the distance from the case to the end of the splines is the same for both small and big inputs. There is plenty of extra room inside the pilot hole to accomodate the extra length. How did you use a 390 flywheel on a 351M? Must have vibrated like crazy without being balanced for the 351M.

I didn't!
I used a 390 flywheel on an internally balanced 460. Flywheel to crankshaft bolt pattern is totally different between a 351M-400 and a FE -Lima engine.

I think you know what the subject is/was. Try to pay attention!

I thought I was, you didn't mention the part about the 460 though I didn't know the flywheels from the FE's would interchange to 385 motors Something to file away for future use.
