HD Clutch fan? Some help...

I'm getting a 3 row GDI radiator , mr. gasket 180 thermo, and i wanna get a new heavy duty fan clutch and blade...
Now I was looking around...and almost everywhere sells this hd clutch for about 99 dollars? At 5.0resto.com they sell one for 65...is this the same clutch??? It say its heavy duty and has a better thermo and hub and stuff?
I was just gonna buy it there since no one has it that cheap...anyone else buy one from there? I also need a new BLADE...they are out of stock at 50resto, therefore i need another place to get one..they sell them for 35 bucks! everywhere else like 65....ugh...I do not need a specific kind of blade for the hd clutch do i? it bolts up the same? I just need a good engineered 9 blade fan....

the more expensive fan clutch may have been the HD police package fan clutch. they go for about that much.
i got a HD unit from AZ....it does well in 110* heat. and Lifetime warranty is nice.

i think i mentioned on your other thread that PAW sells a metal blade for 30 bucks...i really like mine. i think i have the part number if you want it (they should know which one you need anyhow), if you are interested. the clutch bolts up the same, as you said (whether HD or not).

Whats the upsdie of a HD clutch for the fan? I am having slight cooling problems in traffic. And when I start the AC, it begins to rise. Do these HD clutches function at a lower temp? Or are they just better built but provide no special cooling pluses? Thanks

by the way, my 1985gt is looking for an electric fan to take care of the same issue. I am also thinking about a 140-160A alt to run it. Any comments would be nice.

your Freudian slip (or typo) hit it - the HD clutch is supposed to allow it to not 'die' when the temps get 'up.'

it is recommended for when a/c is used often and/or the car has to idle a lot. in warm climates, many folks run them nonetheless.

i think the HD units are supposed to 'lock up' at lower temps (they dont lock up, but slip less than when cold). im sure some of the smart folks in here can tell us the finer points.

the elec fan and high output alt sound nice, and have been done many times. good luck.

Yep that was a typo. Took me 4 times reading it to get it. My brain saw what it wanted to see...

Anyways, I think Im gonna try the HD clutch. I am going to be driving alot in traffic and with the AC on. Its a worthy place to start. Any comments as to what brand or model to buy?

I just ordered mine from 50resto.com... 65 bucks...and they told me its the same HD clutch used for the police cruisers that sell for 99 bucks everywhere else....
they also sell the fan blade for 35! no wonder its out of stock until late june!!
so i had to buy it for the real price somewhere else....65 dollars..ugh..oh well

So they dont have them until mid summer huh. Dammit. Awell. And I have a large order to place with them. Im getting alot of stuff from them. They seem to have good prices and a nice free catalog. I hope this works for us! I want to run my AC so bad! Its hot down here in FLA! Good Luck

i should add this, so you arent disappointed. your temps will rise with the a/c on in traffic (and temps above 90* or so) almost no matter what, on a stock-ish system.

unless one has a super duty cooling system, i think it is almost inevitable.
Joe, how hot are you running with a/c vs w/o?

Clutch fans are suposed to get firmer as the temps rise, that's why they have that coil looking thingy called a thermistor. If it looses tension as it gets hotter, it means it's not right.

There is a company out ther that sells a thicker, metal, fan to go on that HD clutch. With the GDI radiator you should have no trouble's what so ever. If you do maby you have other problems.

My stang never boils over. Thats what gets me. I know that when its 90s and Im in traffic the engine is gonna warm up. Its a fact and with AC on its gonna get hotter. If I can remember right, it would get close to 215* ish with the ac on in traffic. Running the AC on the open road was no problem, just in traffic. I could smell the hot water smell in the cab. Thats what worried me, but rarely it ever boiled over. Im just wanting to keep it somewhere below 210* with the stress on it. Not under 200 or anything. I am replacing the t stat with a 180, I think the sames in it now, and get some water wetter product to add a few degs lower.
I have read that the HD fan clutch is good for slow traffic and AC systems. Thats why I wanna try it before going the 200A alt/elect fan route.

Do these above temps seem outs line? or too hopeful? Thanks

Joe, is that with an aftermarket temp gauge?
i would not let it go over 215 (it can take it, but in case, you have fudge factor and allow for gauge error).
try a Mr Gasket 180 t-stat. people think i am kiddin about the difference in it compared to parts store units (in appearance and function). i think you will be happy (and ten bucks at a local speed shop).

a stock fan and clutch move a lot of air, if they are up to snuff. it can be tough to match the performance with many aftermarket electric fans (sans Mk VIII, etc).

Thanks again Hiss, Yeah I have an aftermerket temp gauge with actual degrees! yeah., not that crapy stock one with low and high on it.

I am about to buy one of the HD clutches and see what happens with it and a Mr Gasket t stat 180*. flush the rda out and give it new juice and water wetter additive. Hopefully that combo will give it the cooling it needs. If not, I want to add a 130A alt and a small pusher elect fan for help.
