Header Install Question

Hey guys,

I just purchased some flotech long tubes, off road X pipe, flowmasters, etc... So basically I plan on really opening the exhaust system up. I've done some basic research on the header install and to say the least, it looks like a PITA! If I bring it to an exhaust shop for the install, how much $$$ are we talking for labor (ballpark)? Would it be worth dropping the extra cash on the install or give it a go on my own? Figured I'd get some opinions from those who have done it before...thanks again guys!

Expect to pay 400-700 in labor. Personally I would not use an exhaust shop, but a Mustang shop being they have more experience in doing Longtubes. LT's can be done with patience and time being you have to drop the K member.

I did it myself cost me about $300 to buy the tools that I needed with one of those being a cherry picker

Where in IL are you from? I know of two local guys from my local club (Chicagoland Mustang Club) who do header installs for a lot cheaper than a shop will charge you. Plus they have performed the install multiple times on Mustangs. I have had two different sets of headers and had them both installed by club members for cheap.

Theres also a number of performance shops in the Chicagoland area that sponsor the club that can give you a price (Sutton HP, Straightline Performance, etc...) - if you would rather a shop perform the task.

I am around 75 miles south of the loop, so not that far. If I could find someone to do it for $200-400, it may be worth the expense. On the other hand, I do have quite a bit of tools; including an engine puller. I did the bolt ons in my signiture, so I guess I'm somewhat mechanically inclined. The process just kind of seems overwhelming!

I say try and do it yourself. Reading the install write ups make it look very overwhelming, but once you get in there its not that bad. Its more time consuming than anything. If you have a cherry picker you are much better off, I have done the floor jack method several times in its a bit tougher and more risky.

Another reason to do it yourself is you learn about your car. If you plan on modding it more (which everyone catches the bug) you can have that experience and not always have to worry about where to take it and paying someone to do it. You can always see if someone in your local mustang club will lend a hand if need be.

yes it looks overwhelming and it takes a long time. It took me 18 hrs with the car on jackstands but if I had to do it again I could probably do it in 10 or so.

Thanks everyone; I got some info from Edgar on some guys that do it around here, so I'll see what they have to say. If it's going to be a bit more than I bargained for, I figure I'll give it a whorl on my own accord.
