HEADERS FOR 66 351W

I need to get a set of headers for my 66 with PS and auto transmission. I checked the header chart but couldn't find what I needed. I'm going to change to a manual transmission later on and need something to fit that. I read that Hedman and JBA had headers to fit this application. I'd rather stick to Hedman because of the price. I checked out Summit and their Hedman Headers would't work with a manual. Any suggustions?

The only manufacturer that I know that will make them is Hooker. I knew a guy at the track with a 351 in his 66 and he indicated that he had to call them to get them made, they are a special order.

There may be other people who make them but it will most like have to be a phone call to talk to someone live.

I do not know what size you are looking for. But, you might want to call Ford Powertrain Applications and talk to Stan. I recently purchased set and I was happy I did. I chose 1 3/4 long tubes and had them coated. I did have to trim about an inch off of the bell housing to prevent one tube from rubbing.

Hey thanks for the ideas. I really don't want a cable but might have to if specialty headers are too expensive.

All headers made for a 65/66 with a 351w will be a tight fit and require a few minor modifications. I've used a couple different ones now.

My previous swap header were from Tubular Automotive and they sucked. 1 1/2" tubes and poor ground clearance. That was about all that was available in the late 70's for a 65/66. Thank goodness we now have options.

For $500 you get 1 3/4" tubes with 10" long collector.

Excellant ground clearance, works with manual or auto (I use a stock Z-bar.) I specified that I had a Lakewood Scattershield which is huge.

As I said fit was tight, but not terrible. I lightly tweaked the RH shock tower and removed about 1/4" off the bellhousing near the starter (a common mod.) The Z bar practically takes standing on your head to install, but once you are done, you will realized that the problems were few for such a decent header.

Travis, is this for a 351W in a 65-66 Mustang? I spoke to Stan months ago and he told me he did not recommend anything he has for me. Although e did sell me a set for my 302 Boss.

He said he did not want to sell me a set if I was concerned with ground clearance since they would have the equal hang of my current Hooker SuperComps. I'm not trying to be judgemental with you guys, just trying to make sure of the ground clearance and fit in case I buy a different set. Which part numbers did you guys purchase?

I used Accufab BT110. My 3" collectors are barely 3/8" below the floorpan crossbrace. You could not make one fit any tighter. Seriously! The car has 5 1/4" from the bottom of the collector to the ground. It also has new, standard V8 springs in the front and the Shelby mode which lowers the car some.

Keep in mind that I have a high port head (slightly higher than Vic Jrs) and I used 65' instead of 66' motor mounts, which lowers the engine about 1". The header collector hangs parallel to the ground, not up or down.

George asked me several questions about my build and delivered me a good product. He basically told me what to expect. I am sure that Stan would do the same. Neither one is going to make promises that they can't fulfill.

Anyways, I am please with my headers. Perhaps I'll see if I can get a picture this weekend.

The headers I got were for my 67 with 351W. Stan made it sound like he could accomodate for just about any mustang combo. If not, sorry for the reply.

The Coke Challenge

Here is a pic of Accufab 1 3/4" headers on my 65'.

A coke can is 4 7/8" high. I can still put a finger between the top of the can and the header. Note that the bellhousing is just as low. Total ground clearance is 5 1/4". I can't put a finger between the top of the collector and the floor pan cross brace (Transmission frame support.) Collectors are basicaly parallel with the floor.

The engine is set as low as it will go in the bay using 65' motor mounts--just clears the idler arm in a full turn. Body has 1" shelby mod. New standard rate V8 front springs.

The lowest part of my car are the Caltrac bellcranks at 4 1/2". A coke can cannot slide under it. That is ok because I didn't build it for 4 wheeling. . . .

I have not hit bottom yet and I live where there are lots of RR crossings and the rural back roads that have small hills that make you go "Wwwweeeeeeeeeee."
