So I'm sure I will get flak for this, but bear with me. I'm new to the forums, but figured that this was the best place to come for answers.

My husband recently purchased the performance pac from SLP for my '01 GT

http://www.slponline.com/view_product.asp?P=M31060

Now us, not ever dealing with mods before believed that the kit was street legal. We missed tightening down a nut somewhere and ended up with a bit of an exhaust leak, took it to the shop who told us that the kit was illegal and that they couldnt touch it due to Federal Law.

So, now what do I do? I love everything about the sound and the performance, and I'm not a stupid driver who will show off and draw unnecessary attention.... but the fact that its against "Federal Law" worries me.... How much trouble can I get in? I live in Washington and my vehicle has never had to be inspected and as far as I know, wont be in order to be licensed, so I'm not above leaving it as is unless the consequences are more than a fix it ticket.

If I need to change it... any legal ideas on how to get similar sound?

This should probably be in talk.

Where do you live? I would say forget about what they said and don't worry about it. But....

*Do you have emissions testing in your area?
-If so then how long until your next one?

*How is it done? (All they do here is pull codes so you won't fail for no cats)

Just take it to another shop and tell them you have an exhaust leak, flirt if necessary to get your way.

Good luck!

I live in Washington state... there is no emissions testing as far as I know. Been here for 4 years now, and never had it done.

Its not a matter of fixing it... thats covered, we can fix it in a half hour now that we were told where it is.

What I'm more concerened about is that I was told that because the cats were moved that its against federal law.... what happens if I get a nosey cop?

So basically as long as I have cats I'm not gonna get in too much trouble unless I'm being stupid and attracting a lot of attention?

Yeah I'll say thats a safe assumption. Cars without cats are crazy loud and definitely more noticeable over a car that has one.

My car is crazy loud now, lol.... the sound clips on the site dont do it justice. However she doesnt bark unless I really get on it.

Thanks for your advice. By the way, since moving the cats is against Federal law, worst case senario, anyone know what happens if I get caught? Is it just a fix it? Or worse?

I live in WA too. Where abouts do you live? Eastern WA? I live in Everett. There are some counties that don't require it, so I would definitely not worry about it at all. Just take it somewhere else. If you live close I could probably recommend a shop or two.

You still have cats, and that is legal. Don't sweat it. I was running around on my old Stang with an Off-Road ProChamber (NO cats) and Flowmaster Catback and never had an issue.

I live in Poulsbo, so Kitsap County. So, no testing, just wanted to make sure that our wonderful staters arent gonna give me hell....

Sorry bout all the questions... just happy to have the work done to it and worried that it would go to waste, lol.

No, you will be fine. I am sure it sounds sick. You should post up some pictures of the car when you get the chance.

You need to have them hosted somewhere on the internet like MySpace or Photobucket then you right click the picture and click copy image location then paste that in one of you posts and put
right behind it.

My only concern is that you paid $2200 for $1400-1800 worth of parts. And for $1500 you could have gotten a COMPLETE supercharger kit (minus intercooler) on ebay

you'll be fine, i run high flow cats altered from their original positions (and 2 instead of the original 6) and i live in California! If i were you i'd be running off-raod pipes w/ no cats. Don't sweat it

Thank you everyone for your advice....

As for those posting stating I could have gotten different parts, or that I spent too much or this or that.... I'm happy with my parts choice... I love the sound, I love the performance... My concern was simply for the legality of the car, thats all.

Isnt that why we all love our cars..... everyone can do their own thing to them.

Yeah I agree go to another shop. No one is going to bother you about the setup since you don't have emissions check. Worst case senerio..... you get pulled over by a cop with a chip on his shoulder and he gives you a ticket for illegal/loud exhuast. I have no cats and i'm in florida, but i have no emissions testing. My 99 GT is super loud too BUT I LOVE IT!!!. Have fun!!

as long as there are cats on the car, you shouldn't be harassed by any cops...plus since you say you are not a crazy driver and don't draw a lot of attention, you should be A OK
