heat shield

Thinking of fabricating a heat shield for the turbo coupe. I can bolt it to the intercooler and to the side of the engine so it covers the manifold. What do ya think? Is it worth it?

If you can do it on the cheap, then sure, give it a try...just make sure you don't block airflow through the intercooler.

It won't restrict any flow. Basically it will be made from some scrap sheetmetal in my shop that I'll be using. It'll be covering the manifold without touching it and be routed over the emissions tube and under the jacket water hose. i'll bolt it to the edge (ear) of the intercooler with a 1/4 -20 and the bolt that holds the clamp for the tubing. It wont chafe on anything and it should work. I think it should take away at least 40 degrees from the intercooler.

Here's a heat shield I fabbed up last week. It's only a mocked up prototype made out of an old street sign. I just picked up a piece of stainless steel yesterday to fab the real thing. Also, I posted a pic of the template. The top 3/4" piece I cut off and bent 90* and used as a bracket that's riveted to the shield and bolted to the elbow. I'll be using 1/16" thick S/S. This thing is rock solid! I'm running a FMIC but I'll bet it'll work with the TC top mount. The shield is only 3/4" off the turbo.

I bought a piece of stainless steel from mcmaster awhile back that I wanted to use to make a heat shield much like that (over the turbine housing), except rounded. I was gonna cut a strip off one side of the big piece I have and use that to make some stanchions that would sit on the turbing housing bolts (both ends). I might get around to trying to make it one of these days.

That shield looks nice, But i am more interested in where you got that outlet elbow. I looked all over for something like that...

It's an older discontinued Spearco piece I bought off of turboford.org. There's a guy on TF that makes his own and sells 'em cheap. His user name is markwells.

Did you get that manifold from 40bob.com? I was looking at them and they're expensive. I might just send mine to a machine shop.

Yeah, that's a 2nd generation Bob's log. I bought it used off Turboford.org - $125. Check internet classifieds and Ebay. A much cheaper option would be to port the E6 on your '87 motor. Sometime in the next 2 weeks I'll be porting the E6 on my TC and I'll also be posting a photo tutorial on the procedure.

Cool. Let me know how that goes. I'm putting a new engine in my car this week and I'm getting some ideas. I'm wondering how much a machine shop would charge me to port my E6. Maybe even the upper intake.
