Seems like one is larger than the other

I believe if you look at things, it will be clear which goes where

Yes indeed. One hose is 3/4" and the other is 5/8". The larger one goes closest to the passenger side fender.

Apparently my ex-husband made that mistake.

It doesn't honestly matter which way the water goes through the heater core. As long as it fits and it doesn't leak.

One of the factory hoses does have a flow restrictor in it.

On an older F100, we accidentally reversed the heater hoses and you'd have thought the thing was going to blow up. Somehow the reversed fluid path caused the cores in the heater core to vibrate and moan. Strange, I know...

Well ... Yes I know it
and
So do those who have read this thread
and
You too will know it if you look at the two different size hoses

Put the small one on the small barb
then
Put the larger one on the larger barb

If you trace the two hoses you will be seeing it just as Ford
made it available to the public

Just trying to show it is one of those things that can be fleshed
out with a small amount of common sense and a bit of
observation

I wasn't aware of any flow restrictor in Mustangs. I'll be replacing these hoses soon. Is it possible the restrictor is built into the heater pipe on the intake? I've had these hoses off on previous cars and they were just basic rubber hoses.

Over the years when this subject comes up

I've seen some say they found one in the OEM hose at the firewall
and
I've seen some say they found none in the OEM hose

I did not have one on my little 95GT

I rigged up one by using a small freeze plug with a hole in the middle

nice! I think I have one such freeze plug laying on my work bench, I might rig something up when I install the explorer engine.

I've never seen a flow restrictor on any of these hoses, and I've worked on a lot of these mustangs. I would say, that if you found a flow restrictor, it's something someone added later on. Either way, the hoses pretty much only fit on one way. If you get them backwards, it's going to look retarded, and one will be too tight, and the other will be too lose. I put a flow restrictor on my bypass hose. I never really saw a point in having a flow restrictor to the heater core.

I've found the plugs in many Ford products over the years

It is my understanding a reduced flow rate takes a bit
of the wear and tear off the heater core
