I have a noise that is coming from the driver side rear. It is a pop that occurs when I let out the clutch from a stop or when I give it throttle from low speeds. It sounds like someone taking a hammer and hitting the drum on a drum brake setup. However, obviously I don't have any drum brakes! It does not make the sound when going over bumps or on corners so I don't think it is suspension. My car is a 95 GT. Stock rearend 3.08. Any Ideas are welcome, cause it is driving me crazy :bang:

Take a look at the control arms, as well as your torque boxes. My 95 needs some welding in the worst way on the torque boxes, as it sounds like someone hammering in the rear like you said when i turn up curbs, etc, and sometimes when i start from a light going straight. Of course there's always the possibility that it is brake related as well...

Torque boxes are the mounting points on your frame for your control arms. The problem with them is that they're usually fine for your average daily driver, but once you start abusing it, the factory spot welds pop once they've been exposed to repeated hard launches and downshifts. I'm sure there's quite a few people here who are definitely experienced with the woes of the factory torque boxes, and maybe even some who have replaced with battle boxes, or re-welded and reinforced their factory boxes. The best way to check (and biggest pain) is to remove your rear seat bottom, scrape out the insulating material, see if the spot welds are popped, and the floorpan dented upward. If they are, plan on using a big hammer and a block of wood to beat the floorpan back down in order to re-weld them into place. It sounds worse than it actually is to fix, but plan on doing a fair amount of welding (preferrably the entire seam, not spot welds), and look into reinforcing them with some pieces of steel. A quick google search for torque boxes will probably give you a better definition, and might offer some better ideas on how to go about repairing/reinforcing them if they're damaged.

Trying to be optimistic, try taking a look at the bushings in the control arms. The rubber ones from the factory do tend to dry rot and wear out just as any other rubber part would, so it's entirely possible that they may just be worn, and needing a replacement. Also, if you've recently had to torque the bolts on them, make sure the suspension is loaded (axle on jackstands, not jackstands on the frame) to make sure they're not overtorqued and binding once a load is placed on them.

Edit: Some places like Midas will do free estimates and help you diagnose a problem if you don't have access to tools/equipment, or don't really have time to spend lying on the garage floor with a light trying to figure out if welds are bad.

from the explanations so far, it sounds like I may have some issues with the torque box(s) on the driver side. The reason I say that is I can hear whatever it is pop out under the acceleration load, but then it real quietly pops back under less strain. Im going out to the garage to climb under the rear to inspect the bushings and bottom of the torque boxes now, what I need to know is how to remove the rear seat. Appreciate the help. Mine is a coupe if that matters (probably doesn't).

Twist the Driveshaft and see how much play is in it and if the clunking is coming from there. I popped a few teeth on my pinion and it clunked liked you explained for weeks before I realized it was the rear.
