Hoping you guys can help me out with this.

Recently I locked myself out of my apartment. I was able to pop the lock by just shimming the bolt with a credit card. This disturbed me a bit. I know that a deadbolt would fix this but its a bit out of the question with this door since it would require a lot of modification to the door and I'm just renting.

Anyway I was wondering if anyone knew of any tricks that would defeat this trick. My house is pretty viewable to the neighbors and I'm sure they would report anything suspicious but this card trick is fast. I was in in 5 seconds. Took a tad longer when I showed the wife, but not by much.

Anyway I'm looking for a quick cheap solution just to prevent this. I'm not too concerned. I'm home all week and when I'm not the wife is. Also I live in a duplex and the neighbor is usually home during the day or outside in his workspace. Anyway, I pity the fool who attempts to enter my house unwelcome when I or my wife are home. :uzi:

At the moment I'm thinking of having my father in law help me fab up something but I was hoping there was a quicker trick for the time being. Any ideas?

Thanks

you NEED a deadbolt

I know. But thats not going to happen for the moment. Its not my place, I rent. I don't feel like paying for the parts or doing the install and my land lord is cheap and probably won't do it for many months. Plus I'm not sure the door can be easily adapted for a deadbolt.

I need a quick fix now. I think I found a piece made by Mag Security that could help.

if you tell your landlord he should install one within a week. there are agencies that will raise hell with him if you call them and tell them that he wont install a dead bolt on your door.

Ask your landlord if you can install it and deduct it from the following month's rent payment. This way you get the security and don't have to wait for month's. A deadbolt is a must.

Thats for when we get the house. Train them to be friendly, except to strangers on the otherside of the door. Nobody wants to test a big dogs bark.

Yeah guys I can get her to install a deadbolt but it will take awhile. I want a quick for the moment. I still think I should get a guard to also stop prybars. Even with a deadbolt this frame would be easy to kick in or hit with a prybar.

I just checked the door. It kinda tough to put a deadbolt in it. It was converted from a slider into a double door where only one side opens inward and the other is just a glass insert. Its also made of some composite. Crap. Place is cheap and crappy and I'm out next spring. Seriously if i had the time I would tell you guys all about this crazy jerry rigged place I'm in.

Anyway I'm not really worried about someone smashing in the door. This building and door are visible to a large busy country store. I just want to stop tricks that don't nessessarily look suspicious. Like Carding or using a screwdriver. Hell I doubt anyone could tell I wasn't using the key when i carded it. I was in quicker then a key turn.

And buggin my landlord is a tricky. They also run the locak j/y and I want to stay on their goodside. Threats of agencies or insurance companies are probably a bad idea. Nagging will work better.

I know that in Washington it's the law that a rental must have a deadbolt. Check out NH's renter's code.

NH's a very odd state. We didn't even have building inspections until the mid 80's. This place had out of code 2 prong outlets. I had to rewire most of this side. Luckily my dad was in the electrical supply industry so I got all the supplies for free. That and grounds had been wired to all the outlets. I dunno where they got the outlets. Probably from the j/y they own.

NH is one of the few states that does not have a deadbolt requirement for a rental unit:

New Hampshire Landlord/Tenant Law
48-A:14 Minimum Standards Established. – No landlord, as defined by RSA 540-A:1, I, renting or leasing a residential dwelling in a municipality which has not adopted ordinances, codes or bylaws pursuant to this chapter shall maintain those rented premises in a condition in which:
I. The premises are infested by insects and rodents where the landlord is not conducting a periodic inspection and eradication program;
II. There is defective internal plumbing or a back-up of sewage caused by a faulty septic or sewage system;
III. There are exposed wires, improper connectors, defective switches or outlets or other conditions which create a danger of electrical shock or fire;
IV. The roof or walls leak consistently;
V. The plaster is falling or has fallen from the walls or ceilings;
VI. The floors, walls or ceilings contain substantial holes that seriously reduce their function or render them dangerous to the inhabitants;
VII. The porches, stairs or railings are not structurally sound;
VIII. There is an accumulation of garbage or rubbish in common areas resulting from the failure of the landlord to remove or provide a sufficient number of receptacles for storage prior to removal unless the tenant has agreed to be responsible for removal under the rental agreement and the landlord has removed all garbage at the beginning of the tenancy;
IX. There is an inadequate supply of water or whatever equipment that is available to heat water is not properly operating;
X. There are leaks in any gas lines or leaks or defective pilot lights in any appliances furnished by the landlord; or
XI. The premises do not have heating facilities that are properly installed, safely maintained and in good working condition, or are not capable of safely and adequately heating all habitable rooms, bathrooms and toilet rooms located therein, to a temperature of at least an average of 65 degrees F.; or, when the landlord supplies heat in consideration for the rent, the premises are not actually maintained at a minimum average room temperature of 65 degrees F. in all habitable rooms.

+10. Can you rig up a fake camera outside the door?

:rlaugh:

The only problem I see with putting it outside is this...

2 years ago my neighbor in the apartments across the street from me told me, "Dude! The new guy down stairs from me has web cameras all over the outside of his apartment in the window and there's 1 in the tree!"

Not 2 weeks later the cops busted three people there for running a meth lab and thanked them for putting up cameras so that the Cops would know they were up to something :rlaugh:

I have the 9mm and .40 Glock :nice:

:nice: I have the .45 (model 21) and can't wait to get a 9mm (model 19). Strype, I put a Crimson Trace laser on my 21 and it is amazing!! You can get it for a lot cheaper than this but this is what it looks like:

What model 9mm do you have? I shot a .40 S&W M&P this weekend and it was one of the nicest guns I have ever shot ... surprising for a S&W copy of a Glock :rolleyes:
